Title: Whoa. 8 years old?

Supposedly the kid is 8.  As someone who spent a fair bit of time playing the geeetar, I can honestly say this impressed the willies out of me.  Enjoy.

He has the mechanics mastered but I will argue that nobody can really play guitar until you have thrashed yourself senseless with bad woman and good drugs for a full decade or three.

Seriously, he can play incredibly well; But it was very "text book" sounding to me.

No heart in it.... I think even the guitar got board.

I hope he paces himself. A guy I new back in Cali started that young and by the time he was 17 he had arthritis in both hands so bad that he had to stop playing all together.

I agree... sure he can play, but it performance is boring... he didn't move during the whole performance.

Considering he's already about 15 years ahead of most guitarists, it's safe to say he will pick that stuff up as he goes along.  I'm wondering how a kid with hands that size manages to pull that off...  8 year olds have small hands.

Big deal. The kid can move his fingers fast. Not one ounce of expression or feeling in any of it. But with a bit of luck his technical skills will stand him in good stead for the future if he learns to express himself through music instead of what he's doing now which is basically showing off. That music didn't say anything except "Look at me! Look how clever I am!"

(and before anyone thinks I hate technical shredders go listen to Tony MacAlpine. Pyrotechnics and expression don't have to be mutually exclusive.)

I wasn't being hard on the kid. I wish I had technique like that. I did say that they will come in handy in the future, I just think he needs to stop learning scales and start learning music. I wasn't comparing him to MacAlpine either (heck I wish I got compared to people like that! I usually get compared to two cats fighting in a bucket...) I was just using him as an example of how playing like the kid's can be used to say something with the music.

Wow a McAlpine fan!! I have listened to him since the 80's.. I live in a small town and 5 or 6 years ago he stopped in and played at a SMALL bar.. It happened to be on my B-day too!

Yeah, and I had lunch with the President yesterday, and found ONE MILLION DOLLARS on the street, and then I went and climbed mount everest.  All before I did a round of golf with Sean Connery, who was in town for my award ceremony. ::)

I now have a mental image of you as the onion boy from 'kids in the hall'

Then he showed me pictures of him and henry rollins, at his house.

Cool!  Hank is great (don't know him hehe), but I have seen him in concert.. never seen his spoken word though.

The only proof I have of my ''Brush with Greatness" is his CD that he gave me and they all signed it.. "happy b-day'' etc.. was realy cool.

Hmm, I must have missed that when I read his autobiography and saw the play based on his life.

check:
1) I don't expect Henry Rollins at my house any time soon.
2) I don't suppose that if he did show up that he would want to play wizard of wor.
3) If he did start screaming "BS, that's BS!!!" and started smashing things, I'd politely ask him to leave.
4) If he didn't start yelling, I would sit him down and ask him if HE knows anyone that takes everything literally.

That kid really has some talent. Everything he is missing will come as he ages. I do wonder however, WTF was that kid to the right of him doing other than standing there and looking stupid?

LOL, that was my talent 10 minutes ago!  At least with an instrument in my hands.  Teaching yourself (at least myself) to play guitar at 35ish is not an easy thing to do....

Relax onionboy.

I'm sure I believe you.  I've been around musicians and music stores for almost 20 years, and I've never heard or seen ANYTHING like that kid.  So to get your 2 bits thrown in "oh that's nothing, I know a kid TWICE AS GOOD" sounds like a load.  So I'm calling a spade a spade.

No need to get nasty, just show me the video of your prodigal kid and I'll apologize.  Until then, you're full of it  ::)

You make onion boy sad :'(

Hey Zakk, do they have KITH on DVD up there by you?  I don't think the show was that big here in the states and it seemed to have kind of a little cult following so I dunno if they've got it out here.  I saw mebbe a season's worth of episodes, but when they were funny, they were a SCREAM!  I think you're trashing the good name of a humorous show by equating SuperSoaper to ANY character there, but if it'll make ya feel better....I'm crrrushing his head!....oh, that doesn't feel very good does it?  crush crush crush ;D

On a related note...

I don't know this kid, but have seen him play since he was 6years old.

He is LD Miller of the Clayton Miller Band.. They are a family who plays blues..

All I can say, is this kid has the soul of an 80 year old blues man!!!

www.claytonmillerband.com/audio/ldbuddy.WMV (http://www.claytonmillerband.com/audio/ldbuddy.WMV)

Above is a link of him playing with Buddy Guy!!!! If anyone is from Indiana, they need to make it a point to see this band..

id love to upload a video, problem is, there all old camcorder tapes and i lack a tv tuner and dont own a vcr..

whatever tho, you dont have to beleive me honestly, i could care less.. but one thing i am not is a lier..

teRibLe at proPer CapiTalizAtion, puncutation, proper synonym usage, spelling, and a myriad of other issues, but a lier...know whey!

But then again, Zakk, I know you're wondering to yourself how you could ever tell if someone who IS a "lier" is currently telling the truth to you.

On a related note, Zakk I know you're a good realtor and all, but I know this guy who's twice as good as you and could beat you in a sales race if he only had a bicycle to ride to showings and whatnot....say what you will, but I'd put money on it if you guys could ever meet, and trust me, I'm not a lier.

Don't we ALL know someone who's the type to always have to say "oh yeah, that's ok, but let me tell you about ________" ?  Regardless of who/how many people think this kid's skills are merely ok, the fact is that IF there exists another who is at least as good - they don't come around often, otherwise we'd all be talking about "this hot new guitar player", and as such, this kid's skills should be commented on.  That kid's good enough that he deserves some of your tots, Zakk ;D

Okay, guys.  Be nice to SOAPboy.  I don't care how many guitarists anybody knows or how long you've been hanging out at music stores.  There's *always* somebody better.  And when you find a kid that's better than this one, there will still be another one out there who is better than him.

I'm willing to give SOAPboy the benefit of the doubt.

I dunno racer, we weren't all that harsh, and so far he's called me a wanker (must get out my cockney-english dictionary to see if that's bad or not), and has told Drew to BLANK off.  Doesn't seem like we're the ones not being nice.

Besides, soapy knows a guy who's a lot better than you at mediating disputes!  (oh I couldn't resist that one!  ;D)

I dunno...I'm thinking something more anti-social.  Think of it Zakk!  We could have a place for Floyd, SubZero, BlueOakleyz....wait, after the obligatory banning of them, we'd be back to square one!

Your idea seems to be the one to fast-track....I give it:

Point taken, but when one calls into question one's integrity, one can sometimes tend to get a bit defensive, prompting one to tell one to "bugger off".

I've often questioned Zakk's integrity, and he - mine, but I've never felt the need to tell him that....and I've only heard him mutter it under his breath about me, which if I cared would prolly bother me to no end.

I stopped questioning his integrity when he decided against purchasing the Acura Integrity and decided to grow an obscenely bushy moostache in order to convince us all he was serious about the Ferrari.

I'm guessing Zakk pruned his moostache in the spring and it just exploded like his bushes.  He could tell us, and I certainly wouldn't think he's a "lier".  I also feel compelled to demonstrate my points if challenged, as I think it's the thing someone bringing up a point does when they ARE challenged.

Or do like I do and blow it off instead of letting it fester like a pus-filled gangrenous sore on one's nether regions.  I may have lost everyone but Zakk with this tangent.  I better stop before I become obsequious, purple and clairvoyant. :P

Where's that beer thread?

I really want that ferrari dammit.

My integrity is NEVER in question since I have none.  I'm a SALESMAN fer god's sake!  :P

Still, if I was to make a statement such as, "well I finally bought that stupid car for $50,000", and someone was to say "as if you did"(Drew), then be sure you will see a picture of me humping er driving my new beast.

That is to say, I will BACK UP a statement instead of just saying "bugger off".  Well I may say something like that, but only to Drew in PM  ;)

Drew, you know, I think people would think we don't see eye to eye from time to time!  How far from the truth!  Eh, what's that?  ;D

Oh and stop with your tangerial messages (no I didn't make that word up!)

Yes I agree 100%! I don't believe he is 8 though. He may be 12, but the kid is amazing. When I was 12, I was trying to play the three cords in Smoke On The Water.

If anyone has any negativity towards an 8-10-12 y/o kid, that can play like that, they are just plain "Jealous!"
Big deal. The kid can move his fingers fast. Not one ounce of expression or feeling in any of it. well.. that kid is good... I gave him that... I'm sure he practice a lot and has a lot of hard work behind the scene...

but somehow, I just don't enjoy his performance... I don't feel his music....

I mean... lightning fingers... perfect memory... yes, impressive... somehow... it also gets old evry fast....

I would rather watch and listen to some simple, harmony, music / songs....

but in no way I'm trying to put him down....  ;) ;)
good for him to have that skill at that age...
