Back in '91 I stayed at the YMCA.  Was decent enough I suppose.    Don't know how much it was, it was under a group rate.

Thanks Peale, looks as though the Y rates can vary from $40-$80 depending on the neighborhood and availability.  Thought about staying in Newark or surrounding area to save a bit but then I fear I would be paying the difference in taxi fare to get into NYC.  So I'm still checking options.
Anyone else?

You can get a cheap rate in the Hoboken and Meadowlands area and take the bus service to the Central Bus Terminal on 42nd (I think) and then from there you can take the subway to anywhere.

You can stay at the picturesque Floral Park Motor Lodge which is located within convient walking distance from the Long Island Railroad (which will take you to the city for $12 round trip as long as you travel off peak and remember to change at Jamaica).

Finding cheap Hotel rooms in Manhattan is going to be hard unless you really want to stay in some seedy room in a less than desirable neighborhood.  Your best bet is to find a hotel in the surrounding boroughs, or better still, Nassau County, LI and just train it into the city.  It'll drop you off right at Penn Station and everything you want to see is a walk/bus/subway ride away.  When it's time to hit the sack, you'll be in a nice, quiet area without the blaring traffic to wake you.

GGKoul,DaveMMR thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely check them out.

Some questions, how is public transit from Newark airport to Manhattan? Hotel rates at Newark airport are looking pretty good right now.

Are Metro cards good for both train (subway?) and buses?  Thinking about just getting the 7-day card when I arrive since I plan to hop all over town.

Sorry for all the questions, been to NYC just once for 5 days March 2004, my son Kev was sick and we didn't get to do all we wanted to, so I want to try solo once and do as much as possible in a 5 night stay.  We were in town for, of all things, Wrestlemania 20, a gift from me to Kev (and me, yeah I'm a "mark").  ;D

Got a great deal then, roundtrip flights and 5 nights at Crown Plaza U.N. less than $1100 inclusive thru Travelocity for the two of us.

OK, keep 'em coming, still planning, all help appreciated.

Thanks! ARCADIAC!

Yup, Metrocards are good for Buses and Trains (but not the Long Island Railroad).  I'm not sure of the trip from Newark to Manhattan (I'm assuming you'd take New Jersey Transit).

There are a bunch of hotels around madison avenue and 28th street that seem to cater mostly to European travellers.

newark airport has a shuttle into the city, it's some sort of train deal.  Most of the hotels in Newark will have a free bus to the airport too, so all you have to do it pay for the shuttle.

But, the some of the fun of NYC, to me at least, is the 4am walkabouts, looking at weirdo's, seeing everything bustling.

if you're staying in Newark, you might miss that stuff.

Just checked, $22.00 round trip

Thanks all for helping out.  Found a good hotel in the East Village, Hotel 17, a hostel actually, it checked out with good reviews and the location will save traveling time/expenses from Newark or anywhere else other than Manhattan.

All booked and ready to go, I'm getting kinda hyped now!
Watch out NY for the wandering hillbilly from KY!   :o

Thanks again, you guys rock!
