Title: ms pac man monitor is green!!!
Post by: richardp171 on May 26, 2005, 11:53:44 am
Hey I need everyone's assistance on this one. Just bought a cabinet without a board. Finally got a board that supposedly works from e-bay and when I plugged it in I got a green screen on the monitor?  What is the problem? the board or the monitor?  I fiddled with the controls on the back of the monitor but nothing came of it?  Any ideas?  I just had the monitor recapped when I first got the cabinet so I don't think that is the issue??

Thanks

so your saying I need a priest???  Father Sabastian might think I am weird but I will try Sunday during mass.  Roll up the ms pac through the pews. Think it might work?  I might need a 100ft extension cord.  St Denis is a large church.  I will let you know Monday.

Thanks!!!!

I'm no expert, but I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and suggest checking the readings on your +5 and +12 volt lines (especially the +5 volts) to the boards...

If it's an original MsPac board, it doesn't have regulated +5 and +12 V DC running to it, it has 7 V AC and 14 V AC running to the board, that is rectified on board with diodes and 2 transistors to supply the 5 volts to the logic and 12 volts to the audio circuits.

First.. do you have another board to test the monitor out with?  Narrow it down to the monitor or the board or the wiring.

If it's the monitor a number of things could be wrong:
- Red and blue guns dead (unlikely)
- Red and blue transistors on neck board dead (unlikely)
- A Heater->(green) Cathode short (likely)
- A shorted resitor or capacitor in the green circuit (possible)
- bad solder joints (especially if it's a Wells Gardner K46xx series
- Bad wire connections between neckboard and main board

If it's the wiring it could be:
- bad connector on monitor end or missing connection
- bad connector in middle of bundle
- bad card edge connector on circuit board

If it's the main game board it could be:
- peeled off trace on red and blue on card connector
- one or more bad chips on board.

Start narrowing it down... like swap the Red for Green inputs.. does the image tint change/
Adjust the screen control on the flyback transformer down (it may be up too high)

Report back with more info

Wel the first thing to do is to determine whether you have a monitor or board problem. Does the game play 'blind'? If you drop a quarter in does it make the audio tone when a coin trips the coin switch? Does the coin meter count when you trip the quarter coin switch? Can you start a game and hear the game play sounds?

Is the "test-normal" switch in normal mode or test mode?

I checked the coin and there is no sound at all. I did not fiddle with the test switch though. I will try that next. I have 2 boards that I tried it out on and they both have the same problem
thanks

Flip the test switch on and crank the volume control up. Press all directions on the joystick and start buttons and service button and coin drop... Do you hear any sounds?  If not, the problem is in the board or wiring, not the monitor.  Each button/direction you push should produce a different test sound in test mode on a pac board.

Well... it seems you either have 2 really dead boards or some really poor wiring, OR a bad transformer in your game.

First, start at the source... check to see if your power supplies are working correctly.

There should be 2 fuse blocks on the power board.

This is something that we can help you at least narrow down. If it's on the board itself, I can help a *little* there as I have repaired some Pac-Boards.  No need to pay big $$$ to someone who probably won't care of the quality of their work locally to work on a home game.

Keep posting, and we'll help you narrow it down. If anything is unclear, post and I can try to clear up.
