I see many control panels are routed to make the joystick taller.
My question is - are the people who are routing using the taller spacer that is designed for wood control panels or are they routing because they don't have that spacer?
I know it is a matter of preference but does the longer spacer accomplish getting the joystick to a "standard" height in a 3/4" panel?
-
Tall spacer is only a 1/4" taller than the short spacer, so I guess your answer is no.
joystick height above 3/4" panel surface to top of joystick
Super with short spacer, no routing = 2 3/8"
Super with long spacer, no routing = 2 5/8"
Competition, no routing 2 5/8
Bat handle section is 2"
When I had the supers, I actually used the shorter spacer, so I could reach the reverse button easier for defender.

I agree. 3/4" wood vs 1/16" metal is not "fixed" by a 1/4" longer spacer.
I suggest routing out ~1/4" to 3/8" of the wood and using the longer spacer.

I have heard that mounting a super to 3/4" wood can result in less responsive diagonals unless routed? It was on an older thread of this forum I believe... any truth to it?

I don't see how it could.... ???

The stick has to travel a bit further for diagonals and may be restricted somewhat by the cp thickness and the size of the hole...with a thicker cp the hole may have to be enlarged to avoid this type of response problems.
Oscar joystick mounting plates work like a charm.

I have a 3/4" control panel with happs supers (using the tall spacer) and its perfect. I wouldn't want it any taller.
Now my control panel is exactly 3/4" thick (with just some black pica vinyl on top). Are these problems happening for people who have a 3/4" panel with lexin/plexiglass on top?
-
EXACTLY dave, ;)
You only route the bottom when you are using plexi or lexan.supers are perfect for 3/4" wood without anything in top of the panel.

Sounds like there really are differences in preference as Gtjoe made his shorter with the short spacer to reach a button with his thumb while others are using the long spacer AND routing to get some height.
I think the argument that a 1/4" longer spacer does not equal the difference between metal and 3/4" wood makes sense but it also sounds like many are happy without routing so I'll probably go that way since I am lazy!
Question: If you are not routing - are you still using the same size hole as the buttons or would slightly larger be better to make sure movement is not restricted?
-
no biggie..the problem is less then nothing if you are not using any plexi or lexan on your panel.plays fine. :)

mcleanjoel:
I used a slightly larger hole for the joysticks then I did for the buttons. I believe it was 1 1/4" for the joysticks if i remember correctly. It did work out perfect though.

i used the same hole saw as i did for buttons and it is perfect. i suggest you do that and make it bigger if needed. you cant un-cut a hole...
