A couple of months ago I picked up a Hydra cabinet, mainly so I could use the Hydra yoke as a Star Wars controller in MAME, but also because it looked like a Star Wars cabinet that had been converted to Hydra. It was missing the monitor and bezel.
I've since stipped the black paint from one side and have confirmed that it is a Star Wars cabinet. Now the only original (non-repro) part that I think I need is a Star Wars bezel. My question is... can I use the bezel from a Star Wars cockpit cabinet in my Star Wars upright cabinet?
There is a cockpit bezel on ebay right now, but I wouldn't want to buy it if it won't work in my upright cabinet.

Thanks for any insight.

Here's what I've got after stripping one side of my cabinet with Goof Off.

Man what a shame to paint over that artwork. I'm glad you were able to save it. Sorry can't help you on the benzel issue.
-
The answer is NO. None of the art pieces from the cockpit fit the upright (other than the yoke itself).
Shouldn't be too tough of an item to find, as a LOT of Star Wars machines have been parted out recently (due to the fact that yoke+monitor=entire value of game).

Doesn't it feel good to find pretty decent artwork under shite paint?? Well done!

$30 shipping? Is he on crack?

You want to see something horrid? If you can't handle it, turn your eyes away and hit the page down button on your keyboard. This pic was taken by a local collector at the last auction we had here. For shame...

WOW. I want to find that person and kick them in the nuts until *I* am crying.
-
When he saw this and took the picture, I believe his exact words were, "That cabinet makes baby Jesus cry."
-
i love that the game he converted it too probably plays like @ss. i mean, think about it, the dang joysticks are sloped so much, you'd have to quit after a bit just to keep from getting carpel tunnel or a huge cramp.

Good lord, what kind of sick twisted tycoon would want to convert a Star Wars machine!? Star Wars is a great game, why anyone would want to convert it into something else is beyond my comprehension! :(
And what kind of moron converts a Star Wars machine into a Ninja Turtles machine? I love the Ninja Turtles games, but I can't understand why anyone would try to convert one out of Star Wars! It looks almost un-playable. I wish whoever owned that thing would try and restore it to it's original Star Wars state, even if it means getting new artwork printed up.
Good luck restoring that thing though.

That's because you don't seem capable of thinking like an operator. The monitor probably died and he didn't have parts on hand or could get them cheaply.

Thanks for the definitive answer on the upright/cockpit bezel question.
And thanks for the words of encouragement on my Hydra/Star Wars restoration. They'll help me get motivated to start stipping the other side. It's a real pain, but the side I did turned out better than I expected it to.
And now a question for those who have removed decals before...
I have another Hydra sticker to remove from the other side, and I was wondering if I should use a heat gun to try to melt some of the glue to make it easier to peel off. In the picture above you can see a small white patch where the Hydra sticker pulled off the black paint and the Star Wars art beneath. I'd like to avoid that happening again. I didn't do anything to try to loosen it though, I just pulled it off dry. Any hints?
-
No, DON'T use a heat gun. Your other side came out darn good, don't change strategies now, tossing a heat gun into the mix might lift the star wars sideart off as well.
-
Wouldn't the goof off your using to remove the paint also dissolve the sticker glue? I'm not sure if you could lift a corner and use your goof off to peel it from the cabinet or not.
-
A heat gun seems more likely to cause additional headaches, but perhaps a hair dryer would gently do what you want.
-
gotta say, the first one he did came out really well, why change it?
-
uh, cause he could do better (or worse, but let's be optimistic...)
just to add, i think your first side looks great, but not tearing off any art would be the best.
-
You could try spraying it with WD-40.

Yeah, but he DID an excellent job... he's risking messing it up by changing. I'd say that 98% success rate is as good as he's going to get.

Indeed not tearing any art would be the best, and I was surprised when it happened the first time because I already had 98 percent of the sticker off when it happened.
The Hydra sticker is made of some sort of plastic or maybe vinyl, so I don't think a solvent will penetrate to the backing glue. That's why I'm considering heat. I wouldn't use enough to try to melt it off or anything, just enough to loosen the glue so I can peel it off easier.
Actually I saved the 5 inch section that pulled up the Star Wars art with it, and I need to separate the art from the sticker so I can re-attach it to my cab. I may try a hair dryer on that to see how it responds.

Wow, that was great that you got the crap off to show the original star wars artwork.
I would do the same to the other side. I don't know why the words "If it ain't broke then don't fix it" comes in my mind. So why change the method of removal. It works so stick with it. Just have a little more patience. It will be a great reward.

I was just thinking, if you are having trouble finding a replacement bezel, you could come up with a home-made solution to tide you over till an "authentic" one reveals itself. Modified and painted PVC pipe seems like it'd be a good canidate, if you can get it in the correct size.
