Title: Stainless steel dust covers *Other custom work too*
Post by: Franco on May 21, 2005, 03:19:44 pm
Quite a few people seem to have stainless joysticks on there cabs but I havent seen any with stainless dust covers (the bit that stops dust getting in your CP around the joystick shaft).

I made some for my cab (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,33456.0.html)

Those are definitely cool. Any idea what they might cost?

 Franco,

 They look really nice.

Are they hard to clean? (fingerprints)
Do you find that they are rougher on the CPO when they move arround?

Depends on what price I can get the material for and how much interest there is. I should imagine somewhere within the region of $10 a pair.

They would either be made from high quality stainless with a very high quality turned finish or from high quality magnetic stainless steel if you wanted an ultra smooth ground finish.

They could also be custon made to each byoac'ers sizes and profiles (either with an oblique edge or tapered like mine) maybe even with custom grooves on the face?

Mine are ground and I have had no trouble with fingerprints or cleaning (I have not had to clean them, as such, even once). They have only been wiped with a duster when I have dusted my CP. As for fingerprints, I have just tried to leave prints on mine and they just are not leaving a mark. If they did, im sure they would just wipe straight off. This would be even less of an issue with a

Hey Franco those are really nice. I have a feeling the guy I made the X-Men CP for would love a set, I'll send him the pic.

Nice cab too, I somehow missed it before. I did a take-off on that Arcade Classics marquee not too long ago, it would fit in better with the color scheme you've got going. I'll post it in your project thread for you to check out.

Franco-

Figured if we're taking measurements, we oughtta post 'em, so you don't get 50 people all measuring the same joystick.

Here are the measurements for a Wico leafswitch joystick dustwasher.  These are almost certainly good for a Happ Perfect 360 joystick as well, but since I don't have one of those, I wont' say that's for sure.

d1 - outside diameter:  2 inches / 51 mm

d2 - bore diameter:  7/16 inch / 11 mm  update:  This measurement was VERY snug.  I'd go with at least 15/32 or 11.5 mm next time.

d3 - thickness:  1/16 inch / 1.5 mm

Original Wico dustwashers have a dead flat edge profile, but I like B:  Full Radius and chamfer.

You've got PM!

Franco, the metal dust washers look great although personally I don't need them. But I'm wondering, do you have the facilities to manufacture anything out of metal? Could you for instance manufacture joystick mounting plates?

I can make pretty much anything within reason. Ive got access to CNC lathes, CNC Machining Centers, grinding M/Cs etc. I made the Stainless Joys you can see at the top of the thread.

Let me know the kind of thing you are after, ie dimentions etc and Ill see what I can do.

huh...wanna make the community steel handles for the happs 49-way?  randy says he's doing it, and slikstik said they would months ago, but no one has shown up with a product, and you could make them relatively special order, canceling out the need for adjustable sticks, which is what randy does best.

Cant see this being too much of a problem. Just means I would have to buy in some more material, Ive just been using my personall steel so far. How much did Randy / Christian quote you, I dont want to give you a price that would be too high.

Send me some dimensions and Ill find out how much I can get some stainless for. How much interest do you think there would likely be? The more I make means the cheaper they would be, both in machining time and material.

well, you/we might just start a new thread, if this is indeed something you can make a part file for and machine right out.  i don't think either quoted prices due to the fact that neither has gotten around to making any, but you could check out randy's steel joystick prices and slikstiks prices, although slikstik is a bit expensive.

if everything come's out right, i might even be interested in another stick that i'd be the only buyer for (a williams 49-way stick).

Franco,
Could you fabricate solid stainless steel 3" trackball rollers?

Okay. Ill get some material prices over the next few days and then start a thread if its viable. Bat tops will be the preferable design to make. Ill look into ball tops depending upon demand. I also made the stainless joys for my Happ Rotaries that you can see at the top of the thread. I also have a spare pair which I may be willing to sell.

No problem. Send me the dimensions and quantity and Ill get a price for you. I actually made some Ms Pac man shafts for another board member which look similar to the rollers so they will be no problem what so ever as long as they are not too small.

Do you want the same dimensons as the Wico's? Im making a couple of sets hopefully tomorrow or early next week so Ill do yours at the same time. Ill give you my paypal details once they are complete.

I'll try to get you some specs on the rollers Franco unless someone else already has it.

Also,
I don't know if you have the equipment to do it but it would be really cool if you could etch the name of the cab into the tops of the dust washers.
You'd have to charge extra for that of course ;)

Yeah, if you can measure them with a digital vernier or micrometer that would be ideal. I can machine them to within less than 0.0005" but obviously I need some accurate dimentions to start with. I imagine the bearing shaft of the roller would be fairly critical. I would also imagine you wouldnt want too high quality surface finish on the part of the shaft that contacts with the trackball otherwise you would not get enough friction and may lead to the trackball 'slipping'. Let me know on this issue too.

As for etching the washers, do you mean something like this:

I cant etch as such but we have a dot matrix marking machine which gives a pretty good result.

I'm not sure..
Could you make the letters larger/thicker and curved around the washer instead of straight across?

Do you have any idea how much you'd need for each set of trackball rollers?
I don't have the proper equipment to measure precisely enough but
maybe someone could send you a worn out set for measuring purposes.
I'll look around..

As far as I know I can only do text in straight lines, they can be any size though. We have key smith shops over here that do custom engraving, maybe you have facillities like that over your end?

As for a price for the rollers, I would imagine they would be around $30, depending on the tolerances and material etc.

See if you can find some sizes, maybe from the original manufacturer?

Bob Roberts sells a Stainless Steel roller set for $8 but I have no idea if they are solid stainless steel or not.

I should imagine that they would be solid. It would actually be cheaper for them to be manufactured solid than with a bore.

Email Bob Roberts and find out. If they are I would go for it. I wish I could make them that cheap but as I am doing a one off order I would not be able to make them any less expensive.

Sounds like Bob's are a bargin to me!

Very precise.  He is obviously very good at what he does and must be using some nice machinery.
Highly recommended, you won't be dissappointed.

I'm in the market for a ball top replacement for the Midway 49 Way Joystick, but I really want balltops for that old school nostalgia.  Just to let you know and btw all your work looks really great.

Just to let you know I think both types of Joysticks would end up being too expensive lookin at the prices you can get similar joysticks for.

The problems lies with me only being able to do home orders in my lunch hour between other production runs. This means I only get to make one or two of something at once. This would mean pretty much programming, turning, further maching and polishing each order individually. If I had my own machine or the oppertunity to get a few runs of each joystick then the price would be much lower.

Unfortunatly I thnk im just going to have to concentrate on the washers and a few other bits and pieces at the moment. However if the opertunity does arise to make some I will let you all know. Sorry if I got anyones hopes up.

By the way I sent the first lot of washers of and now know the shipping prices to the US from here in the UK.

One pair of washers = $10 + $4 Shipping = $14

Two pairs of washers = $20 + $5 Shipping = $25.

Let me know if anyone else requires some.

If you don't have the facility to accurately bend sheet metal then top mounted plates would be ok. But I'd prefer bottom mounted if possible.

I've got some CAD drawings of joystick bolt patterns somewhere. I'll post them over the weekend.

Thanks

I've managed to track down my TurboCAB drawings.

There seem to be two main bolt patterns in use. The one used by the T-Stiks (and perhaps a few others) and the pattern used by the old Wico leafs. Most of the Happ joysticks and the Suzo 500 are compatible with both patterns.

It would also be nice if the mounting plates that come with the T-Stiks could be replaced with one of these plates. This would require four more holes to be drilled arranged in a 4.2cm x 4.2cm square.
