Newbie question!!
I want to build joystick out of an Xbox controller. I was just wondering if it's possible. I want to use it for games like DOA3 and Capcom vs. SNK 2, so technically, I don't need to use the analog sticks. Can someone please give me some feedback????
BTW, if all else fails, I'll just make the joystick for the Dreamcast and buy a converter. Hopefully the converter doesn't give me any problems.
-
I'm no expert to this... but up to what I have read....
easiest should be get a cheapy 3rd party psx pad, then hack it... test it on psx... then buy those psx-to-dcast converter... and again buy those psx-to-xbox converter....
then you have a controller for psx, xbox, and dcast...
what the heck... buy those psx-to-usb converter also...
then 1 stick / 1 hack will do all..... simple plug and play.....
why do I suggest hacking psx but not dcast or xbox ??
cos people here have done it...
and psx has the most converters.... (I think....)
hope it helps....

A better question might be is it worth the trouble? Quite frankly no, in my opinion. Yes Doa3 and marvel vs capcom 2 (As of this time capcom vs snk 2 isn't planned to be released on the box and mvsc2 doesn't come out for the box until feb or later ) are playable without analog controls as is mk5, but that's it. Literally. Even though I am a HUGE 2d fighter fan (or those that use 2d control schemes), I have enough sense to know that these last few titles are about it. You might get 2 or 3 mroe fighters before the xbox's run is over a few years from now.
Is all of th trouble really worth a maximum of maybe 8 or 9 games? If it wasn't for mk5 (the only innovative fighter to be released in ages) I would say defiantely not. Now a solid maybe, but just be aware of that before you go to a lot of trouble.
Now as for how to do it, I wouldn't reccomend using a ps1/ps2 controller. Why? Well for one it doesn't have enough analog buttons and also sony controllers are rather primitave compared to the third generation controllers that the xbox and gamecube have to offer. I know that as of now no one has hacked the analog portions, but it will be done so it might be best to prepare for the future. I assume that the innards are similar to a sidewinder (they are both made in the same plant) which is the most widely hacked controller of all time.
Just some things to think about. :)

still worth the hassle though(at times, even for 1 game I would built a joystick)..x-box might come out with soul caliber 2,virtua fighter 4 and maybe other games.and the hits are there of course(capcom 2,snk 2).
you dont have a ps2 but still wanna play fighting games then what?need a panel right for the box right :)?
Just get the converter because from what we all know, most fighting games dont require analog so you can get away with psx to x-box converter. :)

Well when the only trouble is going out and buying a ps2 to xbox converter....I think its worth it. ;D Hacking the a ps2 stick means you can now use all the latest consoles in your cab.
As for the analog question, its been hacked. The problem is getting a good enough analog arcade stick that doesn't cost $168 a pop.

Well if you wanna hack an X-Box controller someone earlier told me that the Mad Catz are the best and easiest. I think they run for $20 - $25. I hope that helped you. Oh yeah and the guy said his works great. Thanx.
-See Ya!!!

Not that I'm trolling, but CvS2 is scheduled to come out in January.

If all your looking for is an arcade stick, they already make one for the xbox. http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product_id=801273 (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product_id=801273)
Nothing wrong with hacking but adapters and a stick to hack are going to cost more than this one that will work perfectly.

This even supports rumble, I'd like to see someone hack that. 8)

I rather have the authentic feel of being at the arcade. That crap doesn't even look like it works. I don't care about the rumble feature anyway. I just want to play the game.
Alright everyone, thanks for the advice. I think I'm gonna try and hack into the Xbox (offbrand. Not sure which one just yet). I'll post to tell you guys if I was successful. Thanks again for all the help.

Arcade feel on a xbox? How do you get an arcade feel from playing on an xbox?

As in hooking up an xbox to your arcade cabinet and playing DOA3, CvS2, MK5, SC2, ....

I heard there was a mechassault controller coming out that was $200 its huge and it kind of wraps around you. Has anyone seen this? It has buttons for everything.
-
yeah, the mech controller is absolutely ridiculous. It has (i think) 2 analog joysticks (one with a hat), a spinner, a whole bunch of switches.. etc.
I wish I had a pic, but none available. Although it's expensive, I think it would be pretty cool. Whenever I played mech games on a pc, it always felt like I was just using a keyboard and mouse. This controller just makes the experience that much cooler. hm.... maybe in a couple years we'll all be building Mechs to get that "authentic" Mech feel.

Howard, what about all the different emulators for the Xbox? Sure, you have to install a modchip to use them, but if you can hack a gamepad a modchip should be no problem. MAME-X would be pretty sweet with real arcade controls.
-
Weeby where did you see it? I can't find it anywhere.

Yes they would except for the following problems.
#1 As of now none of the emulators on the box allow you to redefine your keys. Not a big deal for all games, but then again games that ust use a stick and a button or two could be played just as well on a gamepad (although definately not as fun.)
#2 The modchips cause the x-box live! service not to work, and basically any other software upgrade based on the live network. If your aren't into the network gameplay, you should also be aware of the fact that additional levels and add-on's are going to be available via the live network, and the only way to recieve them is to have an un-modded xbox.
In other words a modded xbox won't be used for normal gameplay, it would have to be pretty much a emulator only thing. That would be ok if the box allowed spinner and trackball inputs, but since it doesn't (at least not yet) then it's pretty much not worth it.
Now when the emulators improve then it will be, but as of right now they really aren't up to the task.

lmao @ a ps2 pad being primitave. its the best pad made for a console, bar none. the xbox pads are garbage and gamepube's are just as bad. whether they are first or third party controls. might as well use a jaguar controller.

So do you recommend me gutting a PS2 controller and using a converter for the X-box? If so, is it the same as gutting a regular PS controller? I haven't seen any sites on gutting the PS2 controller. Do you know of any????

Can't you put a switch in the effectively turn off the modchip? You're right though... Although, if you don't have broadband then it doesn't matter either way, you're not getting live! service at all.
So you're telling me that you have to subscribe to live! in order to get addons to your games? What a scam. I guess nothing is free anymore.

I bet its possible :o...just a radio shack ON/OFF switch then wire like the ground in there or something...I think i will try on my ps2 to see how this might work THEN mod the box.see...us byoacERS can figure anything out :D.

Actually I have researched this because I was going to do it. You can turn off the effects of a mod chip, but m$ can still detect the fact that certain things are being bypassed 9 times out of 10. There are some that you can completely dis-connect, but they are the sucky one's that are non-upgradable, ect.
So yes and no. Right now at least it's very hard to fool m$'s live.
Also regarding the live upgrades.... You won't have to have the live service but you will have to have an un-modded xbox. The upgrades are saved on the harddrive so it's a simple task of hooking the box up to your computer and leeching the files off of the hd. (The hackers have already made tools for this.) Unfortunately right now in order to install the packets on another xbox and have them recognized it seems that the box has to be unmodded so that it "thinks" it's connecting to the xbox live network.
Just some wierdness, but there might be a better system to hack by the time that it's figured out.

Thats the controller for steel battalion. The game is bundled with that controller for $200. http://gamestore.ign.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=210196 (http://gamestore.ign.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=210196)
The controller is specifically for that game. It even has foot pedals to go with that massive controller.
Here's a review of it http://xbox.ign.com/articles/378/378622p1.html (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/378/378622p1.html)
I'm sure its the controller I was looking for but the information I had received was that it was for mechassault. Somebody was confused.
-
there is one for that game also and it is $200. rediculous to spend for one game.

Dark did you read any of the rest of the thread? We already knew it was for Steel Battalions, your the one that said there was one for Mech Assault.
BTW- My mechassault came last night but I didn't get a chance to play. The wife put me to work decorating Christmas cookies and cleaning the house for our huge party tomorrow.
Mini gloat- I also got sneakers, quantum redshift, NFL 2k3, Whacked, spyhunter, and evo offroad 2 ;D
