Title: Who's going to the 11:59 showing of Episode III tonight?
Post by: daveg2000 on May 18, 2005, 02:23:46 pm
(no star wars / Lucase bashing pleeeze!)

Who here is going to the midnight showing!

I know I cant wait.  I'm 34 and got hooked on this stuff when
I was 6!!!  This is going to be a great ending to the saga no
matter what anyone says!

Let us know too if your theatre is doing anything
'special' for this!  (cosumes, contest drawings etc....)

We're babysitting my sister's kids tonight so her and her hubby can go see it.  It totally sucks!  Not because we don't get to go tonight but because we'll have those three brats running arround all friggin night driving me insane!

I hate going to movies on opening night, especiallay when they're as popular a movie as starwars.  I wouldn't call myself claustrophobic (SP?) but I would deffinitly go as far as saying I'm crowdaphobic (not a word, I know) I don't like being in a theatre filled with people all breathing down my neck and making it hot and stuffy!  :-X

Personally, I can stand to wait another 20 years until Lucas comes out with his 'fixed' versions of episodes 1-3.   Jar jar will be a box of kleenex in that version!  ;)

I think I'll wait til next week too. Go see it on Cheapo Tuesday.

Without giving it away, on a scale of 1 to 10 of those who have seen it, what would you rate it? Is it better than the last episode?

**Spoilers discussed**

I'll try to keep this short.
Anikan's 'turn' was very quick - but I have a feeling
he already made up his mind before going over to help
the chancellor.  That why I think that scene was as short
as it was. He already debated in his mind what he wanted
to do beforehand... it just took him a few seconds to
actually act on it.   (at least its a good theory.)
As far as the Yoda part.. I 100% agree.  It only lasted 2 seconds,
but It was oh so sweet.  (The whole yoda scene was cool as well)

Dashing and daring, courageous and caring,
Faithful and friendly with stories to share.
All through the forest they sing out in chorus,
Marching along as their song fills the air:
GUMMMIIII BEEAAARRRRSSSSS!

I really wish I hadn't seen "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" before Ep2. That and that George Lucas will develop Carpals and stop writing...

Ok, I gotta rant, having just seen the last installment of the prequels, or as I like to call them, the rape of my childhood memories.

This whole movie (and the entire prequel series) felt forced.

Please don't confuse touching up the special effects to altering the plot. 20 more fighters shown attacking the D*, awesome! The Godfather lets some smug punk debtor stomp on his foot in front of the lackeys and he doesn't get "taught a lesson", WTF?  ::)

Look, don't get me wrong, I liked the Gummy Bears when I was younger, but I wouldn't rent them now, and I wouldn't have wanted to see them in "Back To The Future", which though corny I now own on DVD. In the same way even though the special effects for Voyager are better than the ones for B5, I own all of the latter but none of the former. The original SW movies connected with people on interesting levels, which is *why* it became this huge empire instead of just being another Titanic. These other three movies have characters, and meaning, they just don't *sound* like the other characters, because Lucas was never the person who fleshed them out in the first place.   :D

The issue here is that Lucas is a crap writer, which is why the new movies are all great looking specimens on their own. They're just not "STAR WARS" movies. Do you have that add about those fishermen complaining about John West? People don't want a 'good' movie as a sequel, they want a *better* one.  :-\

How did you not know how Anakin turned to the Dark Side?   :-*

I guess I am the only one who just thinks it is all awesome.

A New Hope was awesome.
The Empire Strikes Back was awesome.
Return of the Jedi was awesome.
The Ewok adventure was awesome.
Phantom Menace was awesome.
Attack of the Clones was awesome.

The arcade games to all 3 original Star Wars movies were awesome.
Star Wars Trilogy Arcade was awesome.
Pod Racer was awesome.
Even that Phantom Menace video game was awesome in it's own way.

I'll be seeing Revenge of the Sith this morning after I get off work, and it is going to be awesome!!!

Something can have problems and still be totally awesome. The original movies (if anything) had MORE problems (and more klunky dialog) then the prequels.

Although you can take my opinions with a grain of salt, after all I like Star Trek too. Especially the craptastic original series (which single handedly has more things wrong with it than most other science fiction combined).

I actually watched the entire original series in the last 3 weeks, and I. am. falling. in love. with the. Shatner Beat. method. of speech.

And after watching the entire Original Series I finally get the popularity. Its not the science, nor the stories, nor the special effects. It is the characters. The popularity of Star Trek is essentially a cult of personality centered around Kirk, Spock and Bones. And they have GREAT backup characters, Sulu, Scotty, Uhura, Nurse whats her face, Chekov, Yeoman Rand.  They all excude a sort of ubercompetence, combined with a real humanity that makes you like them, and want to be them.

TNG and Deep Space Nine (I am not familiar enough with anything after DS9 to comment on it), added good stories, and good special effects, and even more fleshed out characters. They are better shows, BUT the characters on THOSE shows STILL don't invoke that magical quality that the original series characters do.

Picard will handle the situation and then reflect on it. Kirk would handle the situation, romance any unsuspecting young ladies, punch the bad guy in the mouth, and THEN reflect on it.

Different shows, different characters. Both still awesome.

Now Star Wars. It is all just so awesome, even the problems are awesome.

I like it when Luke says "Awe, but I was going to Tahotchi station to pick up some power convertors", because even someone as cool as Luke Skywalker says something gay every once in a while.

I cheer for the brave Gungans going out to fight the Battle droids.

I sing along with the Ewoks.

I cringe with discomfort and delight from exactly how much Episode 2 Anikan reminds me of myself at that age.

I smile at R2D2 the whole time, because he is the only one (besides the audience) who knows the WHOLE story.

I could go on for days.

But with Star Wars it is the world. We like the characters, but we like the world better.
Luke, Han, Leia, Vader, and such, they are all fine and dandy, but none of them can compare to the vision of an AT-AT walking across the plains of Hoth. Not even Lando Calrissian himself is as cool as riding speeder bikes on the forest moon of Endor. Nor is Obi-Wan himself a match for the sheer IDEA of Jedi.

The original movies expanded this world with each film. When they were done we KNEW the world. We knew every little bit and had 15 years to think about it. In that time it all solidified and became something bigger than it was. So instead of enjoying how awesome Episode 1 was, we just sat there saying "What the &$*#%T is a Gungan". Battledroids? Trade Federation? Sith?

Episode 1 added to the world (as did episode 2), and we weren't expecting it, it had happened in all the other films as well, but we weren't expecting it. Everything else had simply had to much time to become solid in our heads, and then they went adding Gungans and Trade Federations and Battledroids and Genosians and everything else.

The fact is that Gungans, Trade Federations, Battledroids, racing pods, Naboo fighter ships and all that are just as awesome as Gammorean guards, Boba Fett, and AT ATs.

I'm still gonna go see it in the theatre though. better experience than a tv.

I never said I downloaded them, I said I SAW them. Saw the early copy of Episode 1 a few days after I saw it in the theatre (roommate downloaded it). I saw the early copy of Episode 2 a couple months after it came out (can't recall who had that one, wasn't me, I haven't "downloaded" a movie since well before that one came out).

Somewhere in the world, someone was copying it about 5 minutes after the copies made it to the theatre. Probably more than one someone, probably dozens of them. One of them had it uploaded directly afterwards, and the rest is history.

I think more likely, they are copies of workprints that leak out.

daveg2000:  I'm getting old so I can't like anything new, eh?  What a weak argument.  For one thing, I'm ony 35, and I'm still a total geek fanboy kid at heart.  I LOVE the Harry Potter movies, and I think they totally capture the spirit and magic that the old Star Wars and Indy movies made me feel as a kid.  And they are 10 times better than anything Lucas has done since The Last Crusade.  Give me a good film, new or old, and I'm a wide-eyed 10 year old again.  The prequels just don't do it for me, sorry.

Anyway, I hope most of you realize that a lot of what I said was tongue in cheek.

Just got back from Episode III.  It sucked for the first two-thirds of the film.  Then it finally caught it's stride with some good action and a minimum of dialog.  Princess and Anikan have ABSOLUTELY NO ONSCREEN CHEMISTRY.  Something about having the two of them in the same scene turns both of them into horrible actors (and the soap opera script doesn't help).  In fact, that kid who plays Anikan is just plane a horrible actor -- he's just especially horrible when he's talking to his wife.

Episode III was much better than Episode II and an order of magnitude better than Episode I, but that does not a great or even a good movie make.

George Lucas was actually funny back in the day.  The dialog between the droids, or between Han and Leia is really funny.  Now he thinks that having a droid or animal look up and say, "Uh oh..." in baby/teletubby talk just before being crushed by some large, falling object is so comical that it has to be used over and over again in the same movie.  And we all know what he thought would pass for comic relief in Episode 1.  Seriously, why in the name of god would a Wookie do the Tarzan/George-of-the-Jungle scream while swinging on a vine.  It's just stupid -- and not funny.  It does nothing but to violently yank you from your suspension of disbelief as you look to the person next to you (who is simultaneously looking over at you) while both say to eachother, "WTF?  Did he just do the Tarzan yell?"

Lucas is a hack

edit: Lucas *has become* a hack

I just came home from watching III tonight and I have to say the movie was good.  Expect for the parts Princess and Anikan were on the screen together.... Horrible dialog.

I especially liked how they quickly tied the III and IV movies together at the end.

I felt I got my $10 worth.

But I hardly believe this is the end of Star Wars movies in my lifetime.

Well, mark me up as a mindless fanboy if you like. I've been hooked through the gills since I saw Star Wars in the theater for the first time back when I was 7 years old. I loved Revenge of the Sith. I loved it all the way through, start to finish. I'm sure I was grinning like an idiot the entire time, because I was just completely delighted. It's a movie. You're supposed to enjoy the show, not go in and pick it to pieces so you can be the Comic Store Guy from The Simpsons on the internet when you get home.

Since I was a kid I loved the Star Wars universe, I'm happy to say that I still have not lost my capacity to get swept away in the magic of it all.

Sorry to dredge up an old post...I little dated....I know...

Well, I resisted reading this thread before seeing the movie, and finally got out to see it this weekend. Well, I gotta say, the magic was definately there. I remember seeing the original Episode IV back in 77 when I was a young lad at least 5 times, and gotta say I hated the last two prequels. This one thought put it all together and brought back memories from my childhood. IT WAS GREAT!!!! I think I'll go and see this one a few more times at the theatre before it leaves. It was already in one of the smaller theatres near the back

Can someone explain to me though why Grievous is coughing? Isn't he a robot? Or is he a cyborg? Was that his brain in the middle of all that technology???

Yeah, Grievous coughing was really dumb.  It was even bumber that it was never explained.  Yes, Grievous is a cyborg. Check out his page on the Star Wars  (http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/generalgrievous/index.html) web site.   I think what you saw in the movie was his "guts" under his armour.  His brain is up under his helmut. You would only know why he's coughing if you were to have seen the last episode of the Clone Wars animated series  (http://www.starwars.com/clonewars/microseries/chapter/25.html) on Cartooon Network.  Mace Windu sent a "force push" toward him as he was fleeing Coruscant with the kidnapped Palpatine, crushing his still living lungs.

It was a good flick, I do agree.  I had some continuancy issues with it. There were plot holes.  But I enjoyed every minute of it!

What?  :o  Which movie did you see? The charity session of SW:E3 I went to certainly didn't have any of this "plot" thing you are referring to.   ;D

I've changed my mind after seeing this movie, Lucas isn't all bad. His visual portrayal certainly kicks the crap out of any other movie without subtitles I've ever seen. But being the best painter in the business doesn't mean you can *write*. I mean, he *landed* the capital ships!  :'(

I finally got round to seeing this today and I was pleasantly surprised. Not bad at all. The special effects were astonishing as you'd expect. But the story also holds together pretty well and the (genuinely moving) ending cleverly ties up all the loose ends. Of course the acting and dialogue were still dodgy but you can't have everything.

One thing they didn't explain unless I missed it is why Obi Wan's body disappears when he is killed by Vader in episode four.

Yoda tells Obi Wan to see a jedi (forgot his name) to learn how to contact the living after he dies. I guess that disappearing act is part of the trick he learnt to make him come back to help Luke after he dies.

I heard my mom and sister talking about Star Wars the other day and one of them mentioned that Anakin is Luke's father.  So I asked them if they knew who Anakin's father was.  When I told them it was god they got mad at me.

The Jedi he's talking about was Obi Wan's teacher, who died in the first episode.

The Jedi he's talking about was Obi Wan's teacher, who died in the first episode.  It explains how Obi can talk to Luke Skywalker after he dies, but it doesn't explain the disappearing when killed.
The EU explination is that as a great Jedi gets older, they draw more and more of their energy from the force instead of from their wheat-bix. Thus, when they are killed there is practically no physical matter left in their form, since they were so close to becoming "one with the force". Tarkin's comment about Obi-Wan being long dead, and Yoda being 900 support this idea, but what the Lucas(tm) reason is I don't know, since I was horrified when Qui-gon didn't disappear.

Quote
Side note: Instead using that power to talk to Yoda about the chicks in the after life, you think he could have mentioned to Yoda that Darth Vader was going to kill the other Jedis.
Like they would have believed him. ::)   Remember, they had a holocam in Palpatine's office, yet they don't have someone assigned to watch that 24/7? And then Anakin tells them that Palpatine is the sith lord, and they make no back-up plans for defending the temple if they fail, despite suspecting that Anakin is starting to side with him? I swear, sometimes I couldn't tell if it was Lucas or Braga writing this thing...  ;D

The Jedi he's talking about was Obi Wan's teacher, who died in the first episode.  It explains how Obi can talk to Luke Skywalker after he dies, but it doesn't explain the disappearing when killed.

Also, if a side-effect of this ability is that your physical body disappears on death then why didn't Yoda's body disappear when he dies in The Empire Strikes Back?

You say that, but the person I went to see Episode III with had never seen a Star Wars film before, quite a feat when you think how often the films are shown on TV. He actually asked me at the end whether Luke Skywalker was played by Harrison Ford in the next film. :o
