Title: PSX pads to hack
Post by: Adeptus on May 15, 2005, 10:01:28 am
I'm looking for a couple of cheap PSX pads to sacrifice for my arcade sticks...
The cheap brands I've seen locally are 4Gamers and Joytech.

Anyone have any experiences with either of these?
Is one better to solder on than the other?

Go to the nearest gamestop and buy used non-dualshock ps1 pads for $4.99.

Quoted for truth.  I just hacked one a few weeks back that I had sitting around.  My local EB had used ones for $2.99.   I'm going to make a few fighter sticks based on Byrdo's plans using them.

I'd heard the genuine Sega ones were a pain to solder ???

Will check the local EB, we don't have GameStop here in Australia...

are you hacking playstation pads or dreamcast pads, cuz Sega doesn't make any PSX pads  :P

I've heard that Sega brand Dreamcast pads are harder to hack.

For playstation though, the regular, non dual shock, pads are fine.

Talking about dreamcast controllers now:

I don't think the standard Sega DC controllers are any worse to hack than the non dualshock ps1 controllers.  The main complaint is that the contacts are small.  Use flux!  However, the madcatz are better to hack because they do not have a delay on the trigger buttons.  Also, I would rather destroy a crummy madcatz controller than a nicer original dc controller.
