For those of you who have purchased smoked Plexi...where did you buy it? I have been to all of the big chains (lowe's, home depot, sutherlands) and don't see it. I only see clear plexi.
-
I've seen a couple pieces at Home Depot, but they weren't labeled well. You kind of had to know by eye it was tinted. (and there wasn't much).
-
If you look on the "special order" pamphlet attached to the rack at Home Depot, it's in there.
It's REALLY expensive, but it's in there.
You're probably going to find the best deal by looking in plastics in the Yellow Pages.
Most cities will have a few dealers that sell to the local sign shops, etc...
You are going to get the best price that way; and can probably get a good deal on having it cut, provided you don't want anything fancy done with the cuts.
-
I've said this many times, you can go to any glass shop in your area and have it cut for you(anyway you like) and save you time and money if you would mess it up your self. You also would only need to pay for what you need instead of a full sheet.

I don't recall a consensus ever being reached on the application of window tint, but I'd think that'd be the easiest and cheapest way to achieve it.
-
I'm not partial to the window tint idea because it has to be done PERFECTLY.
Then again, I get annoyed at a small fleck of paint if it's in my "viewing" area.
What is a good alternative though is to use CLEAR plexi/glass for the frontmost piece, but add a thinner layer of smoked behind it.
That is how alot of the older machines were done.
That let them get the smoked effect in the monitor area, but still silkscreen the graphics onto the back of the glass for visibility/protection.

27.5 x 24.5 Smoked Glass with beveled edges, $27. Pretty economical I think. Thats at a place celled Koonse Glass in Missouri, I am sure other places are similar in price.

Does anyone know of an online site? I would think that the price would be a little better...

You're forgetting about shipping.
The initial price may be slightly lower, but shipping will put it through the roof on you.
-
Yes, it will add to the price. But when you live in the middle of nowhere, shipping is no big deal. Plus, maybe I could FINALLY get a couple pieces of light smoked instead of the standard amber found at Menards...

We do alot of business with Calsak Plastics (http://www.calsakplastics.com/) at work.
I'm not sure what their pricing to the public is, or how much they'll ding you on shipping though.

www.tapplastics.com (http://www.tapplastics.com)
They're local to me, but I think they ship...

Just bought mine and this was my experience.
Major chains (HD, LOWES, Chase Pitken) - None carried it
Glass places in yellow pages - most didnt carry some could get it, price was anywhere from $100-$75.
Then I started calling auto glass places and found a guy who had it and cut it all for 35$ same day, where the others were a day or 2 for twice the price.
CALL AROUND you will find vastly different prices and availability.

Yup. Call local glass places. You'll find it somewhere locally and it should be reasonable. Most major chains like Home Depot and Lowes don't carry it anymore.

Exactly what I did. Two pieces of clear for my marquee and one piece of clear & one tinted for my monitor area cost about $13 and they cut them for me.

If there aren't any "plastics" shops near you, try a glass shop.
