Title: 2 computer parts piles, what to do...
Post by: Mugzilla on May 14, 2005, 10:41:47 am: Comp pile #1: Dell Dimension XPS B800 (800 mhz P3, but no HD and no RDRAM sticks insode...)

Comp pile #2: Dell Poweredge 1400 (Dual processor P3 800 mhz, missing 1 processor. Looks like it takes standard ram...)

I have extra RAM (But no rambus) and HD's laying around. I have my Built by ati vid card. Do I go buy RDRAM, or use a SERVER computer for RAM?

Can you use a server with just one processor?

I have already tried to get in touch w/ Dell tech support, but since both of these machines are out of warranty, I can't get past the "Touchtone computer Nazi" phone system to ask them the exact specs of the RAM I need, if ECC or non ecc ram is reqd for a server, etc.

Suggestions?

I have a 2450 that I pulled from my production rack yesterday. I have run it with a single proc and dual procs.

You may have to adjust the BIOS and/or put in a terminator card (2450 uses slot procs and you need to have a terminator card for the empty slot).

You may also have OS issues, depending on what OS you choose (Win98 may not like multi proc machines)

If your processors are mounted on daughterboards, then you may need a terminator card. Or you may not, YMMV.

You might just power it up and see if it throws an error. If the BIOS doesn't mind things, hopefully the OS wouldn't either.

Sorry ... I'd like to be more help, but I don't have a 1400 (and the rackmounts are rather different than the boxes).

We'll see what it craps back as me when I fire it up!

I say throw some cheapy stuff in whatever is left over, add a halfway decent sound card and build a jukebox.
