Title: Template router question using an existing cabinet
Post by: Lindner24 on May 14, 2005, 01:14:44 am
I've searched both these boards and the web and did not really find what I'm looking for.

I'm somewhat familiar with template routing, but that's with the template placed on top of the wood being routed.

What I want to do is... use an actual cabinet, set it on its side and use that as a template.

I would think I need a flush cut bit with a roller at the bottom.
Any thoughts? Is this possible?
Would I need a spacer between the cab and wood?

I was hoping to find a bit with a roller at the bottom and a space between
that and the blade so I wouldn't risk the cabinet (I don't think they make those???) and use spacers between the cabinet and wood.

In other words, I want to lay my old Joust Cabinet on the side, clamp a piece of plywood on top of it, and make a similiar copy with a router.

A laminate trimming bit should work for your application.

I "Think" you should be OK.  you have to cut the piece of wood very close to the actual size so the bit is only takingoff a small amount of wood.  Adjust the depth of the router bit so that the roller is just touching the cabinet and the cutter on the bit comes to the end of the piece of wood and not beyond.  even so since the roller is in line with the cutter, you shouldne have a problem with bit ruining the tmolding.  if you want to be safe take out the tolding, then route and replace.

You might also try using a 1/4 inch piece of hardboard to make a template first, then place the template on the piece you want to cut.  That way if you mess up you dont ruin the good piece of wood and you can use the template on both sides of your new cabinet.
