More footage for you guys!

I believe this suckers is going to be backwards compatible with XBOX, you can see Fable in the menu screen on the ourcolony video.
Tha MTV thing was ok, at least if they were going to play music it might as well be one of my favorite bands at the moment. Elija Wood did a real good job hosting it, besides that it was pretty cheesy but I was just expecting a tease and that what it ended up it seems.

The only surprise for me, which was actually quite huge, is that the Xbox360 processor is water cooled. That was unexpected.

Yeah, that surprised me quite a bit too. Although it doesnt seem to be a standard water cooling setup as much as the CPU being in a liquid filled enclosure....no resevoirs or pumps that I could see.
I was also a bit surprised that it would have 512mb or ram. I had read 256 previously.... that was a pleasant surprise.
And it looks easy to disassemble and potentially mod ;)

How long did it take after launch to get a working mod chip that could play backups on the 1st xbox? I only got an xbox a few months ago.

I don't know, but I secretly believe that MS will only take token measures to prevent it. I think they know that the modding community really did a lot to push the adoption of the Xbox as a legitimate console. Just like MS did little to stop the pirating of Windows 95 and 98 (some might even say they practically encouraged it) I wouldn't be surprised if they secretly look at the bright side. They want to get Xbox360s into homes. Specifically they want to get more Xbox360s into homes than PS3s (and Revolutions). Anything that can help them do that, even people who they are aren't making money off of, and are maybe even taking a loss from, can be viewed as a good thing. MS knows that the difficult part is breaking into a market and becoming the market leader. Once there it's been easy enough for them to use their vast resources to keep other competition at bay. With $50 billion cash in the bank they can afford a few customers with modded systems. Once they enjoy #1 position they can start cracking down on piracy for real, as they have done with Windows XP.
Now, I think it's a little more complicated with the videogames business, because they have to make some effort to punish the pirates (like the Xbox Live banning currently in effect) to keep the 3rd party publishers happy and willing to publish for their system. But so far I think the net effect of the mod scene has been positive for Microsoft. I know for a fact that if it weren't for the additional capabilities modding gives the Xbox I would own a Gamecube and PS2 right now instead of a Gamecube and Xbox.

I purchased a Xbox just because of that... :o
Same reason why I purchase a Dreamcast too.

Yeah, and I secretly believe now that MS is pretty well entrenched in the market, they'll start sending stormtroopers to houses of suspected modders. They cracked down on modders pretty hard on X-Box Live (from what I heard, I don't have an Xbox)
I'd wager that MS doesn't care about the community any more than they have to, and they probably don't really have to anymore. But we'll see.

that show was so stupid i shut it off after the first ten munites, which incidentally was after the 5th commercial break..
they didnt show jack, and who the frig cares about that transvestite rock killers crap..i didnt know it was a music video release party..
my god its a video game console..
Too much hype for me..couldnt deal..
im sure by the time release time rolls around it will only have half the features they boasted and suck twice as hard..

This is 100 times better then mtv showing...keep in mind, the mtv release was geared towards kids and young adults (not saying we are that) but for me, i just wanted to see the facts... not make a show out of it and have clowns dancing in the streets.
Hopefully my friends gets good footage at E3 and i can provide some better stuff

When is an emulator for the XBox 360 slated to come out?

Not so fast Mr. C. Xbox has never turned a profit. They are a VERY VERY VERY FAR distant second to PS2 in North America, and an abject failure in Japan. I mean a complete and utter failure in Japan. A pathetic, laughable failure. A....just kidding. Except I'm not. But I'm really kidding. By the way, that really happened.
Anyway, Microsoft still has a very long way to go. Nintendo may have been second to Microsoft in North America, but Gamecube was still quite profitable for them here. Xbox has been making a lot of progress lately in cutting its losses. It's still not turning a profit, if I'm not mistaken. If it is turning a profit that's a pretty recent development.
Microsoft will be our best friends at least throughout Xbox 360. We've got at least one more generation before Gates will pull of his Grandma mask and try to eat us.
To be clear if someone logs onto the LIVE service without first disabling his modchip he will be banned from LIVE. That's all. Modding is perfectly legal, so MS has very little recourse aside from this.

Damn, Perfect Dark for XBOX, i was hoping for nintendo to get that one. >:(

I tried playing through Perfect Dark... I'm not big on violent games, though, and put it down after sniping more than a few people.

Durring the our colony videos, they hit that they want you to bring the thing to life and do this and that..
i really think, that the modding aspect will remain..
And im stoked.. ill be in line on release..

Yes, you couldn't play Xbox Live if you had a mod chip, BUT you could play your burnt game online via Xbox Connect.

and on Xlink
which if you used XBMC you could run it just like on XBL except you didnt have to dick around with disks..

Without RARE I wouldnt have played my N64 as much, 007 ,DK ,PD, its a shame we all cant get along and share RARE.
Nintendo dosent have that much 3rd party support as it is, you would think they would fight for the winners at all cost, like they did with capcom RE.

Why?
How many RARE games, were honestly that popular? i can think of 4 maybe..
-
I guess you dont own a cube, besides the nintendo classics,EA(sometimes makes a good game) and capcom theres really nothing else, more good games from a good developer like RARE would be nice.

i did own a cube.. bought it for 1 game, which wasent made by any of the listed companys..
Eternal Darkness..
Only reason to own a cube imo..
*Disclamer*
Im not saying its a bad system, i just dont like 90% of the games on it.

:o The new xbox360 is supposedly at least 5-6 times as powerful! :o
I...have...a dream! That white consoles... and black consoles... and even chinese consoles... will all be emulated on the new xbox!
-
Sorry guys, my undying love for Nintendo comes through in any of my console discussions, XBOX on. ;)

I think Rare only came out with one game for the xbox and the people who started Rare left the company (I think )

Wow....you are so offbase. First of all, when Metroid was going first-person I was pissed. Then I played it and it is fantastic and totally Metroid.
Second, look at Xbox 1. How can you do worse? It is the ugliest console in the history of mankind. Maybe it's the ugliest thing ever invented in the history of mankind. It's like Bill Gates said, "WTF? These people are pasty geeks who subside on Mountain Dew and Doritos. They don't care what it looks like." Xbox 360 looks perfectly nice. It's totally competent design. It ain't revolutionary, but it's good design.
Even if you hate Xbox360's look, and there's no reason to IMHO, you have to give them credit for improvement.

There's always Gameboy Advance for 2D Metroid :)
I just watched the MTV thing. I had recorded it. I have to admit that I didn't think it was as nice looking as the pictures led me to believe. It's quite a bit bigger than I had gathered from the pictures. I still think it looks pretty nice. It's just a little bigger than I expected.
-

Yup, and I picked up a 2nd hand Gameboy Player to play it via the Cube. I own a Sanyo homecinema beamer, playing Metroid Fusion or Tetris on 8.2 feet wide screen rocks ;)
ontopic: I couldn't find it anywhere: is the 360 going to be backwards compatible?
-
Thats one of the things they havn't announced yet, the other is how much its gonna cost.
-
The only thing I've read and heard from a few places (I think Gamespot mentions it) is that the Xbox 360 is "definitely capable" of emulation the Xbox. Hardly an announcement or confirmation, but at least there is hope.
My money is on yes... it will be backwards compatible, but we'll just have to wait and see for sure I guess.
Price is a great question mark too. I wonder what they will box with the system, or an even better question, how many different "packs" will be available.
-
What about keyboard and mouse support, or native VGA output? These seem more important to me. There is really no sense in drooling over a 3rd gen cones game where you are still stuck with primative analog joystick for movement. When will they ever learn...
-
There will be keyboard support on the Xbox 360, but for text input only. It will not (at least officially or out of the box) be available as a control method.
It has standard USB 2.0 ports (from what I've read) so mice may be possible, but again, will probably not be officially supported, if possible at all.
I'm not sure about VGA though... I'm sure at teh very least we'll see a VGA box.
-
Seeing as HD is their big thing I would be surprised if there isn't a DVI option for video.
-

Yeah, I agree.
If it's not on-board, I'd expect a lot of video packs to become available, for DVI and/or HDMI and the like.
My best guess is the video out will be similar to this generation's Xbox with cables avaialble for Composite/svideo/component/DVI/etc.

the MTV show didn't really give out a lot of info. You'd probably be better off getting the Microsoft press conference from Gamespot or similar. I have all 3 press conferences.. haven't had time to watch them all yet though.

The xbox press conference stated that the 360 will be backwards compatible "with the Xbox's top selling games"
Online articles and G4 are speculating that they may only allow you (us) to play the top games from Xbox... ie you can play Halo and Halo 2 on X360, but not your entire collection of Xbox games.
-
The last day of E3 Microsft representatives admitted that they're not fully backwards compatible because they switched chip architecture. The 360 isn't able to fully emulate the Xbox and therefore games need to be recompiled to run in native 360 code. From a PR perspective one could call it backwards compatible, from a marketing standpoint it is a big mistake to call it backwards compatible.
Microsoft plans to recompile "top selling titles" (read: Halo 1 and 2). Since recompiling requires the original source code (which isn't on the disc) there is no way you can pop in your Halo disc in the X360 and start playing. You either need to buy the "recompiled version" or need to download it via the Live! network.

I hadn't read that.. interesting.
If that is indeed the case, I'd hardly call that "backwards compatibility" at all. Even if they give these recompiled versions away for free (unlikely), it is not backwards compatibility. It's playing a recompiled game heh.
I love how marketing teams turn "backwards compatibility" into anything that can play an old game.... that's called emulation... and they are nothing like each other.

My guess is Xbox360 would have trouble emulating Xbox games because the systems are not that much different. Now before people kill me, what I mean is the technology is rather close to each other compared to say... teh Revolution and the NES.
The Revolution can emulate NES/SNES/etc just as a PC today can. The X360 is (for this argument) a very high end PC.... and they cannot currently emulate Xbox games.
With the PS3, they are NOT emulating the games.... you are using the original media. I know that the PS2 had many, if not all, of the processors from the PS1 built it... so it was no problem for the PS2 to act like a PS1. I'm not sure of the specifics of PS3, but I would say what makes them have "no problems" with PS2 games is the fact that there will be some similar CPUs or processes in the system... either that or the Cell truly is powerful enough to emulate the PS2 hardware.
Either way, for my money, it seems that only PS3 and Nintendo (at least with Gamecube)is truly backwards compatible. Everything else is a totally different ballgame.
-
I think you're right: I have seen newsreports (like this onehere (http://www.techspot.com/story5116.html)) that Sony was able to produce the entire PS2 on one chip. This is what lead to the smaller PStwo design. If they include that chip in the PS3, backwards compatibility is a fact. I wouldn't be too surprised if Nintende is able to do something similar.
XBox on the other hand is based on PC architecture - not too easy to recreate in one chip. A it requires lots of muscle power to 'emulate' a recent PC.
Don't get me wrong- this is no XBox bashing, I really like the XBox (I own all three systems) and I will probably get a X360 too, it would have been nice to swap boxes instead of adding another.
-
Since the XBOX 360 has USB ports on it now do you guys think the new House of the Dead that will be coming out for it will work with a GunCon2?
-

Any peripherals for the Xbox360 have to be specifically supported by the system, which includes drivers.
There are USB ports on there, but for lack of a better term, they are partly crippled. You probably won't be able to use a GunCon2 unless someone finds out how to hack the system and install unofficial drivers for unofficial peripherals.
-
Well I realized it would need to have special drivers. But I figured the drivers are probably in the software right? So if the people making House of the Dead Wanted to put them in the software with their game you'd think it would work right? But now that I think about it the new XBOX is supposed to have HD output only so it probably wouldn't have the composit cable needed for the guncon2. Oh well guess we'll just probably have to live with cruddy MadCatz lightguns.
