Title: Should I fix this?
Post by: monkeybomb on May 12, 2005, 12:27:15 pm
I have a monitor that came in a very cheap dynamo cabinet.  I thought it would be fixable but I realy have no clue.  There are 2 problems.

1.  imagine a layer of water over the monitor with a wave maker at the bottom.  it is consistantly making wate movements.  This is different than just a line scrolling from bottom to top, it is creating waves.

2. there is a purple spot in the upper left corner.  Degaused it with the button and manually and it was no help.

Okay, this is the best I could do for pics.  It's a shot of the purple in the corner and the back of the monitor for model.  The thing that has me wondering if I should try to fix it is the under water effect and I can't figure out a way to take a picture of that.

Cabinet speaker magnet and/or the fluorescent light ballast could be affecting the corner color.

Concur with Ken....  But I have to ask this... Where are the convergence magnets on the neck of the tube???  That's a pretty dang long neck, and unless I'm getting really old, I can't make out any convergence rings on it!

I'm not sure what convergence magnets are. :-[  I'm also not sure of the make and model of the monitor.  I'm completely new to monitors but would realy like to fix it myself if it can be done within a reasonable price.  I am aware of the risk and have read how to discharge the monitor a million times.

But the only acctual I have read much about is a cap kit.  If that, or something without much cost, might solve my problems then I'll give it a shot.  I really want to know if there is a point in tring to go for it.  If I start I will most likely become obsessed so I am cautious about starting any real repair.

If I am not able to remove the purple spot by changing the speaker with one that I know is sheilded, might it be fixed with a cap kit?

Also would a cap kit most likely solve the waves that flow over the monitor?

Can I take pictures of these waves some how?  It's seems impossable to take a still of movement.

Is there a chance one of these problems is just unfixable?

What monitor might I have?

If you can't tell what area of the monitor do you need better pictures of?

I hope these are better questions.

Bump.....I'll be taking this cabinet on thursday, and need some advice on this thing. Are the symptoms that monkey speaks of fixable with a cap? Thanks for the help everyone, its very appreciated.

That appears to be a new Wei-Ya 826H replacement chassis connected to the tube.

If you are seeing a wave, it's likely you don't have an RF noise filter on your incoming AC line (before it goes to the isolation transformer) and/or you have the isolation transformer (or other transformers) located way too close to the monitor.

E.g. my Electrohome G07 has a nice wave in it in my Ms.Pac cocktail because the 2 AC transformers are about 1" from the neckboard, while the G07 in my upright Pac-Man is wave free as it's about 2 feet from the transformer board. (Yes, both have cleaned edge connectors and fuse blocks :) )

And I *still* cannot see the convergence rings on that tube... I'm VERY confused by that.  This is what convergence rings look like:
