Title: CD to MP3
Post by: kiwibird on November 30, 2002, 10:44:35 pm
We are looking at buying an MP3 player.  Can anyone tell what the conversion ratio is for  a CD to MP3 format, ie a 80 minute CD converts to how may MB for MP3.
Thanks

There are many variables to consider when converting to MP3.   You can vary your file size by choosing different bit rates.   It depends on what is acceptable to you for playback.

All that said.  You can easily expect a 10 to 1 reduction by converting to MP3 at a good bit rate such as 128.

10 to 1 is what most people use I think, any smaller than that and you noticibly start to lose sound quality.

That would be 800 minutes per cd. Think how much you'd get per disk if you got a DVD burner.....
