Title: anybody else using WG9200 w/o arcadeVGA?
Post by: brandname on May 09, 2005, 07:39:46 pm
i'm running mamewah in a candy cabinet using XP on a 2600 celeron PC.  i have the option of installing an arcadeVGA (64 mb version)...  but honestly, since i am new to this and have things running fairly well (finally!), i am pretty afraid of installing the drivers and customizing the resolutions for everything.

i've spent a lot of time going through the mame.cfg file and changing things to get the refresh right etc...

it's running pretty well, although even some older games just don't as seem smooth and responsive as they should be...  for example, rolling thunder tends to get very choppy.  i will say turning on the triple buffer and some synch options got rid of a lot of the intitial tearing i had, but i'm worried they are eating away my frame rate.

my question is this:  will an arcadeVGA fix this?  at the moment i am using software (not direct3d) scanlines, no other effects enabled.

if you're NOT using an arcadeVGA, could you please (pretty please) post your mame.cfg file so i could check out what others with a simaller setup feel is an optimized setup.

thanks so much in advance.

/patrick

I'm using an AVGA and it works like magic.

I had a couple of initial probs relating to getting the supplied drivers to work with XP but once that was sorted, it makes using an arcade monitor a real hassle free experience and natively supports all of the modes you need to run everything properly.

hmmm... yeah i have heard nothing but good things, was just wondering if people have gotten acceptable performance w/o it.  i think i'll give it a go and hope for the best :)

thanks,

I use a regular radeon with advmame on linux.  With a d9200 you don't need the pre-defined interlace modes that are on the avga since the d9200 will do 640x480 non-interlace.  Using advmame actually gives you much more flexibility than using the predefined avga modes.  It requires a lot more setup though.  Avga is great especially if you would rather use windows...it is very easy to get up and running compared to the alternatives.
I have a page on getting advmame set up in linux if you are interested:
