Title: of interest to those with positional (T2) guns
Post by: brandon on May 04, 2005, 03:50:57 pm
I've been messing around with quite a few Mame games lately with an analog gamepad just to see how many of them work correctly before I fork out money for some positional guns.

You should post this on the mame.net forums.  Nice job for not knowing anything about programming!

interesting.  i've heard of a similar problem with star wars.  it doesn't sound like you've stumbled onto something new since none of the "really smart about arcades or mame" guys have posted that your a genius.  all in all though, nice catch.  this goes to show that instead of complaining about something, you should just fix it yourself.  good work.

on a different note, is it perfectly in center, or could you fine tune it even more than you already have?

again, great work.

Well done! Hopefully the mamedevs agree.  Haze will probably call yours an illegal derivative build and threaten legal action ;D

In my defense, I've been gone for a long time. So nobody laugh when I ask this...

Is there such a thing as a 49-way joystick with rotary capabilities? That's probably asking for too much, right?

If that's the case, I apologize, myself. I just recently hacked my Tivo, and all those boards are incredibly elitist. I guess everytime I see a comment ilke that now, it puts me on edge...

I never thought about hacking a TIVO.  What did you do to it?

Well at the risk of hijacking this thread...

It's a DirecTV Tivo (not fully functional out of the box). I increased the hard drive size from 40GB to 160GB, replaced the image with an image from a stand-alone Tivo, upgraded the OS version, enabled the USB ports in the back, installed a usb wifi adapter, installed a web server (TivoWebPlus) and and ftp server.

So now I can access all the basic features of the Tivo through the web just the same as if I were sitting in front of it, and I can stream or download shows off of it. And now I can telnet in if I ever need to change something or upgrade.

But let's not let this de-rail the thread.

so yeah.. about those guns ;) j/k :P  dont worry about derailing the thread I dont think anybody is all that interested.. which is really no suprise.. I dont think there are that many people using the T2 style guns on their cabs because they take up so much space.. If there were that many people using them then I suppose this topic would came up months ago.. either that or my initial post was too lengthy and A.D.D is preventing people from reading it to the end.. I know I have that problem ;D

An operator guy was gonna sell me his whole busted T2 cab for $25 - guns and all. But that was before I knew what I was doing... How was I to know that the guns, alone, are worth more than thaeach! Yeah, they take up alot of space. It's a shame. It's a fun game.

Agreed - What you should do is post it on MAME.net.

What I think you have done is enabled analog joystick input on lightgun games.  Whether this will probably be added to MAME depends on what the change does when you try to play the games with a lightgun.

It would be nice if either input method could be used (maybe with a command-line flag, or input mapping), but I don't know what that would involve.

joystick input seems to already be enabled in all these games if you just use the -joy parameter.. The problem is that the cursor is in the upper right corner when the stick is centered.. so its as though its only reading one side of each axis.  I think all I did was change the value that tells Mame where to center the cursor ???  That's my guess anyways...
In that case it probably could make it into a MAME build.

If you don't get anywhere with it on www.mame.net, you could also post it (or link to a previous post) on www.mametesters.net (http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=mametesters)

Be sure to test with the latest 0.96 MAME version first though as I think they changed that driver recently.

btw, for some games that is as designed.

Starwars originally had if off center until you moved the yoke a few times... Then it centers automatically.

the others... you are suppost to calibrate the controls ingame.

So I believe that your change might make it work better without any changes... But it will be farther away from the original.

Yes, that's what you did.

To be technical, you changed the default value mame sends when the joystick is centered, but they add up to the same thing.

no regrets here, I hope they work out for ya ;D I have my eye on some uzi style guns but I'm sure I'll end up paying dearly for them..  I'm just glad I figured out how to compile Mame now so I can do a little tweaking once I get them and get my money's worth out of them.. Now if I can just figure out how to get recoil working in a few games ;D

Yeah, T2/uzi style look a lot better, probably more folks bidding on them.  The ones I got are kind of dorky looking.

Figure that out and you'll be even more of a hero.  Folks have been talking about that for a long time.
