I was visiting my in-laws this past weekend and in their neighborhod I saw a Galaxian cab sitting on the side of the road in the pouring rain. The controls and monitor were still inside but the side art and overall look of the cab was worn. The marquee looked like it was in pretty good shape though. It broke my heart... :-[
There was nothing I could do about it - I drive a little car and there was no way to move it....
-
Personally I would have come back with a screwdriver and stripped it but that's just me.
-
That's a sad story. I wish you could've rescued it. :(
Here in CT there aren't that many arcades. There are a few vendors around, but the chances of finding someone who's selling a cab for cheap, let alone throwing it out or giving it away, are slim to none.
-
Never quit trying though. I posted "cab wanted" ads on usenet for over two years on and off and within two weeks I got a System 1 cab in great condition for fifty bucks AND a free PC and monitor fell into my lap. Sometimes you try for ages and then it all just falls together.
-
I have field-stripped abandoned cabinets in the rain before. Got a really sweet kit that way once.

Untrue, you have to know where to look.
Check the newsgroups rec.games.video.arcade.collecting.
You can even post using groups.google.com
Put out a request for any cabinets in CT
I guarantee you you will get a number of responses within 3 or 4 days.

You found a friendly baby raccoon in an abandoned cab?

If we can stand in the pantie section of a clothes store all alone, holding a purse while they try on eight near-identical pairs of pants then they can ---fracking--- well sit in a nice cosy car for a while listening to the radio while we strip a cabinet in the rain.

Yes, it was totally sweet, like Trogdor is sweet!
-
Just today I saw a Super Hang On outside. It isn't raining yet, but it probably will soon. It will probably be there for a while.

GRAB IT GRAB IT!
If for anything, just to sell it to someone.
-
My wife said she'd help me load it in the truck if we were in the same situation...

Sorry to break it to you, but I have talked to a LOT of people with cabs in CT that are constantly turning them over, usually not that expensively. CT has a huge amount of people trafficking cabs out of NJ.

does that newsgroup have a toronto group?

Yup, you're a n00b. No offense. Lemme 'splain:
New England is like the capital for arcade related stuff. There's a massive network of collectors, guys selling stuff, guys giving away stuff, auctions (every once in a while).
So if you're looking for arcade stuff in NE, and you haven't found anything, you're looking in the wrong places.
For example: I've got four cabinets, and one actual non-converted game. Of those four, three were free. One was a complete JAMMA game (that I've since converted to a Mame cabinet) that I got for $130. And the other game was 'Sega Space Attack' that I got for free (but had to drive three hours each way to get it).
Places to try:
- read RGVAC (that's rec.games.video.arcade.collecting) either thru your ISP's newsserver, or thru http://groups.google.com
- read right here. People post stuff here once in a while.
- http://hartford.craigslist.com. Although usually you won't find much there, it's still a source.
- Kevin @ K&S Amusements (http://www.ksamusements.com) is out of CT, down near Enfield, IIRC. He gives away cabs once in a while, and sells decent empties for a little $$$. Contact him, he may have something for you.

RGVAC is a worldwide group. It's USENET.

I have a confession. I was into cabinets about 4 years ago, built one(out of a double dragon cab), got sick of it and ditched it in an alley. I didn't even take the controls, I just got sick of it because I was moving. I still think about it, boy that was stupid.

Amen.
The only reason I didn't grab it was that we were on our way somewhere and my mother-in-law and daughter (7 months) were also in the car with us. I had a stroller and an exer-saucer in the trunk so there was literally no room for anything else. When we drove by about 5 hours later on our way home the cab was gone so I guess someone grabbed it...
-
wow that sucks!
When my wife agreed to buy one house which was too small. I put up my sit down driving cab up as a freebee on the B/S/T forum and it was gone that night.
Then she decided the house wasn't big enough... and we bought another house that has plenty of room for the cab.... and.... I miss my cab... sigh...

If you are looking for cabinets in SW Ontario, check the Coin-Op forum at CGCC. Stuff comes up all the time (mostly in London, it appears).

If you are looking for boards or used parts, you can try Mike at RetroCoin.
http://www.retrocoin.ca
His website is still in that terrible Under Construction mode (but his contact info is there), but I met him today at one of his storage lockers and walked away with an Arkanoid board (which is what I went for), a Galaxian board (untested), a RoadBlasters CP and some Midway flight-yoke-looking thing that we couldn't identify (was for a car game, though ... will have to post a picture for Paige).
He wouldn't sell me his working SW board, though ... that's going to eBay ... guess I should have offered more than C$50 ...
Cheers.

I'm thinking Spyhunter, probably.

Not like any Spyhunter I've ever seen.
The panel is dated 1980 and the control looks exactly like an old flight yoke with a single trigger button on the right grip.
Neither of us could find a matching game in KLOV.
Will try to get pic up tomm.
Cheers.

Well crap I found that last night but didn't want to turn it into a "guess the yoke" thread. LOL (You'd be amazed at what a google search for "Midway 1980 yoke" will turn up. *sulks*

To be fair, the "was from a car game" must have thrown you ... it certainly threw me, but he said it was from a car game.
Cheers.

Any Aussies see any cade cabs ditch by the side of the road. I aint ever seen one. Maybe us Aussies treat our older games with more respect and stick them on ebay.com.au. ::)
