Title: Tempest MAME, getting functional
Post by: ericball on April 29, 2005, 12:33:14 pm
It all started with **FREE Asteroids cab*** Toronto (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,27236.0.html).

Good for you ignoring the frothy-mouthed zealots. Those people are on the same point on the evolutionary scale as hardcore Trekkies. (That's probably going to get me some hate mail but since it will probably be written in Klingon I won't be able to read it anyway) Sure Tempest is a distinctive and visually appealing cabinet but this isn't Chippendale furniture we're talking about here. We're talking about mass produced particle board boxes. As you said it's not even rare. Tempest cabinets are a dime a dozen.

I'll take a dozen!

I've got two, and just saw another on the balcony of a guy I bought some parts from.  I think I exude some kind of Tempest attracting musk.

Wow, She looks surprisingly good. Must have not been out in the rain too long. Also, if it looks like a tempest, plays tempest, and sounds like a tempest, than it is a tempest.

Except it plays 10,000+ gameseses.

Sorry, I had to.

One thing you should add, is that the cabinet's value is often very little more than the value of the vector monitor. I bought a working space duel recently for less then an untested vector monitor.

LOL - I may be one of the few people to get that joke, but I did!!!

Except it won't since I'm not slapping on a frankenpanel but sticking to the original CP, which significantly cuts down the number of games it can play.

It would play more if I can figure out some way to map the spinner to a 2 way joystick.

It seems you got the joke, but to clarify for those who don't....

A member of the boards showed off his handy work, i.e. Taking a MINT centipede cab, hacking off the sides, and adding a slickstick 4 player controller. Didn't even paint the slikstick white.  Must have spent all of 20 minutes "in construction."

Regardless of how many passionate and well constructed replies he got, he just kept repeating: "But MAME is better! It plays 4,500+ games! Better than a single game."

So, I said MAME was his precioussss. It plays 10,000+ gameseses......

What you are doing, I.E. leaving a decent cab in its original form is commendable.  Like you said, no franken panel.  As well, it would be more costly to have built the cab back, vector monitor and all, than to MAME, and help other people restore their Tempest. Friggin Mathbox error grumble grumble.

BTW, thanks again.

Holy $^#%! :'(   Link?
The original thread was deleted, but the project is here: http://home.comcast.net/~ChazMan/

However, the project page won't give you the "flavor" of the discussions on the board here.

I should add to this, that my personal opinion on these is that if you -can- save the original panel, and perhaps sell it to someone who is restoring a calssic, that it is best to do so.  I once did a Gravitar machine, with a 4 player frankenpanel, but I constructed the panel to wrap around the outside of the cabinet.  The new panel had slots cut into it so that it would slide over the old panel area.  The only change to the original cabinet was some 2X4's on the inside for the panel to bolt to (easy to remove).  I still took a heck of a lot of flak for that cab (right Peale?), but in the end people were 'okay' with it since it was not damaged, and the usable bits were all put back into use (the monitor went to a tempest, the panel went to another Gravitar, and the boards were salvaged and re-used.  Everything but the power supply, which I think would likely still be in the cab.  Just a thought, for those who want a bit more real estate on their machine

Say no to classic cab chopping!!! :)

Wow. Thanks for the link. Was the thread removed because the discussion got to "intense" or was the thread delted because it was so old it was pushed off the forum by new threads.

Found some of it.  A lot of the posts were removed, though.

Hey, I'm one of those frothy mouthed zealots.  There is a difference, though, between raping a good cab and saving a dead one.  He's saving a dead one, and doing it respectfully, which is cool with me.  Had he taken a working or close to it Tempest to MAME, it would be different.

Build on.

Oh, you mean that centipede machine was actually working???  Oh I don't remember that.  No wonder he took a bit of a lashing.

It wasn't working, but cheaply and easily restorable, IIRC.
