Found a sister of a friend that has said they have a Pac Man cabinet in their basement. States that he thinks the PSU is bad. I am going to pick it up this weekend and see what is what, if I can repair it, wonderful. If it isn't repairable... would it be blasphemy to use the cab for mame and give away the parts I find? Or what?
I do NOT plan on damaging it in anyway. I love Pac Man too much :) Just need some advise.

It could be a number of things...
It could be the fuses or fuse block... under $3 repair.
It could be a bad monitor ... $5 to $70 repair.
It could be a bad isolation transformer... $15 repair.
It could be a bad linear AC transformer.... $20 to $40 repair (Pac-man's can use Galaxian's ones... you need 120VAC in, and +7VAC and +14VAC output)
It could be a bad diode or capacitor or trasnistor on the pacman board to convert AC to DC.... $1 to $20 repair.
Need more info to tell for sure.
And no, dont mame it. It *IS* the most common cabinet out there, but if the artwork is in good shape, that's worth a lot. I'd HAPPILY trade you a pac-man that had formica on the sides and now all the artwork is destroyed (they scuffed it up to make the cement stick)....

Yes it would be, and it's repairable. You just have to figure out what it needs. ;)
A real working Pac-Man is just sooooo much cooler than a MAME cab no matter how many games it can play.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.
My plan of action will be: If the cab looks good and it is a fairly easy fix, I will repair it and cherish it. If the cab is in bad shape, I will be posting the parts here for the cost of shipping. Something I read somewhere about passing on good parts that you don't need, rang really true to me. So, we will see. Hopefully I will be able to pick it up this weekend.
Thanks!

btw... quick note...
you CAN mame a cabinet without destroying everything!
1) get a pacman-jamma cable (assuming you want to plug that back in.) Can be made for a few bucks... and buy one for like 20+ bucks.
2) get a jamma harness and convert the cab to jamma
3) get a jpac + arcadevga
now plug / play for all vertical 4ways.
If you plan on adding a few buttons... build a NEW control panel (keep the old one). There was someone selling repos without art for like 15-20 bucks a bit ago.
But in the end.. you can swap back/forth between pacman and the others.

I DEFINATELY wasn't going to hack the old CP. :) I am waiting to setup a time for pickup, I still haven't seen it yet, but if there is anyone that needs parts to fix a PacMan, subscribe here, I will post the parts that I salvage if need be. :)

I'll pay shipping on the PCB and send you back a trackball with mounting plate. I have been shopping for a Pac-board for a while. If you don't want a trackball then I can send a brand new Namco Reunion 4-way stick instead.
Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man are in overabundant supply, if isn't NICE with a capital N, then it isn't a big deal. 10 years from now you'll have trouble giving away Pac-Mans if they aren't mint.
