Title: Is bad Crazy Kong art worth documenting?
Post by: Crowquill on April 28, 2005, 03:58:58 am
The cabinet I'm working on had the overlay and marquee of Crazy Kong. I haven't seen this artwork anywhere but it's not like anybody is really missing much. I've already taken some decent pictures, but didn't know if there's anything in particular that I should take pictures of before I strip off the CPO and add some new holes. I'm planning on doing this in the next couple of days, so please reply soon. I plan on scanning the marquee at some point in the near future.

Here's a pic of the CPO:

Part of me says yes. The other part of me just says "Take a high res picture of the panel and get it in the control panel artwork packs or something".

The only value it has is novelty, no one is ever going to need your bootleg Crazy Kong scan to repro one.

I don't know...

I could see someone creating a KlonesKab with ONLY hacked clones in them.... Then build some great sideart with images of only crappy art like that.

Not that rare and already documented (see attachment from the CP packs) (if it works).  MAME away.

Cool. Hadn't seen that one anywhere. I'm going to have to fabricate a new panel anyway due to bending and rust. I was going to use the original for the time being though. It looks like I might be pushing up the timeframe on getting the new one. The one in the pic is in much better condition anyway.

The new panel will be getting the artwork from this thread:

Just want to do my part to help the community that's helped me out. Unfortunately the best I'm offering is bad gorilla art :)

The best thing you can do to document it, is to take the actual overlay off the panel and scan it into the computer with a high res scanner.  Even in pieces if you have to.

Other than that, take SEVERAL high res photo's of the overlay with the camera lens directly perpendicular to it.  Like perhaps taking 5 or 6 pictures of it from left to right.

Also when taking the pictures, its ALWAYS better to ZOOM in, instead of just moving the camera closer.  Cause then you avoid any fish-eye effects.

The point of all these high res pictures are so that someone can vectorize the art...  :)

Good point!  And here (http://localarcade.com/4images/categories.php?cat_id=6&sessionid=e922a4e27da2596a12a8cd07fea24c8e) is where the vectorized art goes!

Any arcade artwork that hasn't already been vectorized is worth scanning.

I'd actually very much like to have a cheesy Crazy Kong cab.

Maybe I'll just scan and vectorize it myself. It's not like it'll take that long anyway. Besides, it's probably easier since I can reference the original first hand.

I'm still not sure if it's worth the effort, but that's why I'm asking. It seems there are others interested.

The convenience store near my house had a Crazy Kong when I was just a kid, probably 81 or 82. I played it for months before I realized there was a Donkey Kong, "hey that's just like Crazy Kong with better graphics!"

I don't know if it's worth the effort, but it sure has fond memories for me.

You still think that you were a kid when you were 81 or 82 years old.  I hope I feel that way when/if I turn 100 or so!   8)  (Just kidding, I'll go away now . . . maybe).

I played Crazy Kong long before I played DK too. For years I thought DK was a Crazy Kong knockoff and not the other way around. If a Crazy Kong ever came up for sale locally I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

If I had been drinking something, you'd owe me a keyboard dude!   :)

Sometimes clones can be a nice change of pace. Me and some friends kept going to a Pizza place that had a bootleg Street Fighter Champion Ed. We'd played real SF2 so much that it was a fun how bad it played. Sadly that bootleg ROM hasn't been dumped yet that I know of (it had a chrome logo on the title screen).

The auction I bought this at back in '93 had a bunch of clones. It was the first time I realized how many bootlegs there are. I specifically remember 3 cabinets lined up together of Mr. Du!

If anyone happens to be sentimental for Donkey KING junior let me know. I now have a PCB and wiring harness to spare :)
