Title: Slot Cutting Router Bits in UK
Post by: Grasshopper on November 25, 2002, 02:27:48 pm
Hi all,

I've just taken the plunge and bought myself a cheap router. It came with a few bits but not the type that I need.

I'm wondering whether anyone knows of a company (preferably situated in the UK) that sells router bits cheaply?

The chain stores sell cheap packs of about 10 or 15 bits but none of them seem to sell slot cutting bits, or the bits that have a bearing above the blades.

I've tried a few specialist companies but their prices are ridiculous. Some of the bits cost more than my router!

Also does anyone know of a UK based company (apart from Happ) that sells T-Moulding, or even batten strip?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should give peole a chance to respond, more than a couple hours at least.

http://www.t-molding.com (http://www.t-molding.com) Sells t-molding and the required bit.
http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/ (http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/) Is a good source for bits.

Not sure about the router bits (apart from the usual big name DIY places).

But yeah you can get T-Moulding from Swallow Amusements: http://www.coin.demon.co.uk/

I *think* it is

I'm also in the same situation, got everything else for my build, controls, materials, but need to get a cheap router and slot bit. All the router bits in B&Q cost a fortune so i'm trying to find somewhere cheaper.

As for T-Moulding, http://www.coin.demon.co.uk/ sells it for

Thanks for the replys everyone.

eightbit: I don't really understand your comment about my follow up posting unless you were making a joke. If you look at the date that I started this thread then you'll see that my follow up post was made almost two months later! Anyway thanks for telling me about t-molding.com and mlcs woodworking. Have you bought from either of those companies? If so what was your experience? I'm a bit reluctant to order from abroad because of postage costs etc. However as a last resort I may give them a shot as their prices are better that the UK companies I have come across.

Minwah & GSXRMovistar: Thanks for telling me about Swallow Amusements. T-Moulding can also be bough from Happ (UK) although it's difficult to compare prices because their catalogue prices are in US dollars, and they sell by the foot.

The weird thing is that my router only cost

My bad I must have been in a bad mood when I read that post, I thought it was the same day.

I've ordered from mlcs and they make top notch bits for good prices. Lots of people here have ordered from t-molding.com and I've never read any thing bad about them.

I have ordered some parts from Swallow Amusements, and they arrived about 4 or 5 days later.  The only downside is that they do not accept credit card payments, so you have to post them a cheque.

Still can't help you with the router bit I'm afraid...I'll probably be in the same boat when I finally start my cab...

I was in the same boat - but I think when my cabinet is in a position for finishing off, I will just router the edges to a slight curve.

Anyone see any problems with this ?

It's taken me ages to find the link again but this company manufacture slot cutters and have a range of suppliers across the UK. I considered it for my cab but in the end I was too cheap and mounted my dremmel with a cutting wheel in a home made jig, worked ok - took ages!

Some of the cutters are not cheap, but this one http://www.trendmachinery.co.uk/profinder/display.asp?PartNo=C143AX8MMTC (http://www.trendmachinery.co.uk/profinder/display.asp?PartNo=C143AX8MMTC) isn't too bad and might fit the bill. Check the stockists link at the top of the page for one near you.

Good luck.

Depends on what you used to build the cab, what the look your going for is, and what durability your looking to get.

Thanks for the link gajaman, there seems to be a few stockist fairly close to me.  I brought myself a router last night so I'll check out a few stores at the weekend for the bit.

I haven't actually brought the bit yet as there were two of them slightly different sizes. Thought it was best to get the t-moulding first then the correct bit.

Wasn't till you mentioned it that i remembered that happs have a minimum order, thats a major pain, wishing i had added this when i ordered all my controls.  >:(
