My control panel design is going to be an adaptation of the original Gauntlet. So, I've begun the process of vectorizing various pieces and parts. Here is a first shot of one of the coin door "arrows". The T in Thor isn't as perfect as I would like, since the font (Eckmann) that I got didn't print its capital T like Gauntlet did. The T you see in my pic was a quickie Pencil tool operation. Auto-Trace is useless. I also have not found a good replacement for the text below the player name, which reads "THIS SLOT ONLY". The closest I have found so far is ITC Weidemann Bold. Still tracking that down as well. :P
Anyway, I'll keep at it. It may not be the most professional of jobs, but I'm trying, and hopefully when I'm done someone else can get some use out of it as well. :)

Here's Thyra! It takes a long time to vectorize this thing! I think she came out pretty well, even though some parts aren't the greatest (chainmail for one). She's probably the toughest of the 4 though.
-
Nice work there! :)
Are you going to release the resulting vectorized files once you are finished?
-
I certainly am. I'm hoping to finish Merlin tonight. His beard is tricky. :)
-
Here's Merlin! I really want to know if you guys think this looks okay. He's fairly close to the original, but he looks a bit more ominous, I think. His beard isn't completely accurate either.
-
I'm impressed with them. Unless somebody else wants to do a better job, then they should just shut up and accept your contribution :)

ouch that's rude.
-
I'm just not 100% happy with the way Merlin came out. The original art has his hair/beard seem much more flowing. I would have a better time at this if I had a tablet, but I don't. :(
My intended application for these will likely cover up a lot of flaws (more on that once I get all of this done) but for others that really want to create a faithful recreation, I suppose my .ai files (I guess I should upload them as .eps) will at least serve as a starting point.

believe a tablet is NO necessary.
believe me I do every tracing just using the mousse ;)
just work at the higher significant zooming you can and trace the thing following the "tangente"

Perhaps, but it wasn't directed at anybody - well, not yet... only people who are critical of Veinmann's efforts. I think that they are great.
Anyway, didn't you notice the smilie? :)
-
Thanks for the compliments. I don't mind criticism though, since I doubt anyone would be more critical of my work than myself. ;D

Questor's done! So far I think he has come out the best of the three I have done. He is almost an exact match for the original. Now on to Thor.... 8)

as you are getting more and more practice you'll have better and better work.
if start again merlin you will notice the progress ;) ;D
-
:D We'll see, but I am guessing that doing him over would just start a vicious cycle of do-overs. I'll have to wait and see how he looks in the final application.
-
And here's Thor. He was definitely the easiest of the 4. Now I'm going to work on the monster head that is near the top of the control panel.
-
The monster is done! And he wasn't as hard as he looks. There is a black line running down the middle of him that I will just photoshop out at the end. This image is reduced about 50% or so. Now all I have left are the divisions between the 4 player panels. 8)
-
hey those looks great, keep up this good job.
-
Your player representations are awesome. You are doing an incredibly faithful representation, that's for sure.
Keep up the good work!

I have completed all the elements that I meant to complete. My next step is to begin incorporating them into my control panel of my cabinet. I think it should be pretty interesting, but I'll let you all be the judge of that once I get something to show. 8)
This is a GREATLY reduced shot of my vector art sitting on top of the original CP. In the shot below, all player medallions, the monster at the top, the instruction arrow in the lower middle, and the left "curly" divider are vector art.
-
Looks great. Are you going to reconsider and do the minor details, such as the bits around the buttons? Did you finish the other three coin insert labels (you only showed Thor so far)?
I'm really looking forward to moving house soon, so once I've finished my bartop, I'll have the space for a Gauntlet cab :)
-
I will probably end up tweaking Merlin a bit, since he's the only part that I'm really not happy with. I did in fact finish all 4 coin arrows, but didn't do the border that runs around them since it probably won't work for what I'm going to do. We'll see on that one.
As for the buttons, probably not, but anything that I haven't or won't do will be easy anyway. :)
Actually you can see the four coin arrows in the Vector WIP thread stickied in this forum.

Hey Veinman, just wanted to say good work. I love that artwork and have been following your thread since it started. I have to admit that the game is a lot less exciting since I'm not ten anymore and don't have to worry about blowing my allowance on one game, but, now that you've done this work, I'm seriously considering adding a modular four player gauntlet panel to my current bartop in progress.
Cheers,
KenToad

Thanks, and believe me, I'm not 10 anymore either. ;) Although I was older than that when Gauntlet came out.
For me this game has a special place in memory just because it was one of the first (if not THE first) that I encountered where 4 of us could all team up. Plus it's good mindless fun, and it's always a laugh grabbing or shooting the food that your buddy really needs, or continually stunning other players so that they get nailed by Death or can't pick up treasure. ;D
-
Extremely impressive work!!! ;D
-
Thanks!
Guys-
I've looked at a couple screenshots of the original cabinet, and in at least one of them, the instruction arrow looks black. The piece I'm working from is from localarcade, and it's blue. Any thoughts?
Also, it's my assumption that Thor's coin arrow should match his red background. The coin graphic I downloaded shows his red to be much more washed out. My guess is that I have some inaccuracies in colors due to different scans.
-
Well if you want to see what I've been working toward this whole time, check out my cab construction thread here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,36516.0.html
I posted a small pic of the control panel overlay. 8)

Just sent Veinman a PM on this...does anyone know if he finished doing the vector work on this, and if so, is it available?
thanks
-
Sorry I've been out of the loop for so long, and I switched hosts so none of the links for my construction thread are any good anymore.
I'll look into uploading my vector work to the library. I always meant to do that. :-[ :-[
Edit: I just uploaded the coin arrows and the CP element vector art to the vector art library. The CP bombed while uploading, probably due to it being almost 15MB, so I sent them a URL from my own site. When I went to download it, it appeared to come from localarcade. Is it really coming from my site?

please can you convert the lettering to shape (there is an option in illustrator for that) this way people that don't have the Eckmann.ttf font may use your great work without any loss.
thank's
pm me the updated file and I'll commit the update to AAL
-
Ahhh, sorry. I should have done that before. It will be easy since there is only lettering in the coin slot file. I'll take care of that tonight and send you the file.

Thanks Veinman, your work on the characters is great. Can't wait to get started on my four player panel now.
