Title: Monitor Sides Squished
Post by: CRiMiNaL on April 26, 2005, 02:40:07 am
Hey,

I have a 20 year old Wells Gardner K4914 Arcade Monitor. I just installed a K4900 series cap kit for it and I have to say the picture is very nice for such an old monitor.....

There is only one problem with it. The horizontal sides are squished. It is very bad looking when u play side scrollers or text is scrolling along the screen...

i've tryed adjusting all the pots with no luck. Would a width cap kit fix this proglem becuase I have one here but I don't have a clue where the caps go...all the caps have different numbers then the ones of the same size on the monitor pcb.....

Thanks,

CRiMiNaL

On the 4900 series, capacitor # C365 is the one to change value to change the width range adjustment of the width coil. Remember you adjust a coil not a pot when adjusting the width. Bob Roberts has a page explaining it at www.dameon.net/BBBB/width.html

hey ken,

maybe I should explain my problem a little better. I used the width coil and the horizontal width fits the screen perfectly it's just the sides are squashed together....like when text is scrolling across the screen it's looks smaller on the sides then it is in the middle on the screen.....playing a side scroller like metal slug looks very weird....
how would I fix this?

I had a 7000 series doing this, turned out someone had put a very wrong value cap on the horz size circuit.

I replaced with the correct cap and the problem was fixed.

Hey,

There is no cap for C365 on the monitor pcb  ???

I just installed one of the capasitors from the width cap kit for C369 (ken i think u mean this one)......it didn't help anything, the sides are still squashed together

C365 is the width capacitor. It's supposed to be a .33 uf @ 200 volt (or higher) capacitor. This cap may also be marked with the value 334k on it.

Look on the parts side of the main monitor board. Behind the horizontal size coil (L352) is a jumper wire J37, then another jumper wire J36, then the width cap C365. Basically cap c365 is located halfway between the L352 width coil and electrolytic capacitor C313 on the circuit board.

Hey Ken,

The C369 i replaced was marked (F334K J  250MPP 1)
The one i replaced it with was marked (473k  2ASE)
There was no difference in the picture when i done this....will this be ok?

Now on to my main question....there is no cap on my pcb board for C365.....itz located right above J36 but there is no cap there....

there is only a red wire going from one of the holes to this adjustable coil on the metal chasses....

so i tryed putting a cap marked (F .47K 25nMPP) there with one end connected to the redwire in the hole.....now when i power up the monitor i get no picture at all?!?!?

Ken what can i try next?  this is the 4th time if taken apart this monitor i'm going crazy  :'(

Ken i think i found it.....

the red wire i was talking about is connected to a capasitor on the metal chasses.....itz marked (394 J  200 k) and itz connected to another big cap right next to it marked (334 J  200 S)

I'm going to connect a cap for the 334 j one ans see what happens

there was a difference in horizontal width after i installed the big caps.....but the sides are still squashed ::)

the right side of the screen is more squshed then the left side is this helps....

Hey Ken,

I got it working perfectly after!  :D :D :D

the problem was there was no capasitor at all on C365....i put one on there out of my width cap kit and presto...no more squashed sides...
thanks for your help ken i would never have got it working with out your help ;)

by the way in my atemps to get the sides working i changed to big caps on the metal chassis...they were marked (334 J  200 F) & (394 J  200 K) i swaped them with the 2 big caps that come in the generic with cap kit.....with this be ok or should i put the old ones back in?

Thanks a million Ken!

I'd say the old original ones should go back.
