Title: Question for the pros

Hi there

I am just wondering if there is a way to make winxp disappear but still be able to get into windows to do maintenance?  Maybe make to user accounts I am not sure,  I am heading to work so I just thought I would throw the question out there and look for replies when I return.

I have a similar problem, i wish to have a person disappear and still be able to GET IN  and do maintenance, unfortunatly its not easy.

Perhaps if you were a little more clear... You want the GUI to completely go away, or...?

What exactly are you looking to do? Execute a program without the OS overhead? Lock out Windows so no one can access it?

Basically, you'll need to hack the ntoskrnl to change the start screen (be very f**king careful about this, you may have to do a format if it goes wrong!), and them have a little muck about with the registry.

I'll have a look and see if I can find my original post...

As for getting in and doing maintenance, I find that the best way is to use whatever style you want to actually hide windows, and set your FE as the shell.  If you need to get back into windows, open the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL), click on NEW TASK and enter 'explorer' without the quotation marks.

I dont know if you want a user to disappear from the start list thing but I did this exact same thing!

Go in your registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Then add a REG_DWORD with the name of the user and its value should be 0.  This way, you can use CTRL ALT DEL to access the manual login and you can type the user/pass there.  I use this on my computer downstairs so nobody tries to screw with my account.  Hope it helped!
