Just about finished my first cabinet and would like some comments on the 'puter I'm putting in. Will the following play ALL the games in MAME? Is it too much, is it powerful enough etc . . many thanks
AMD 64bit 3000 + 939
ASUS A8V - Deluxe
1 gig DDR400
Radeon 9550 256mb
DVD rom

i would think overkill for just mame, but if your running zinc or pc games then its all good

No current computer will play all the games in Mame at full speed.
-
Really ... I assume you are referring to Carnevil and the like?
-
Yup. There's a handful of more recent games you should cross off your list, and then you'd find your specs there are way overkill.
-
if you'll be playing computer games on your cab too, or more computer intensive emulators (Dreamcast? PSX?) then you could use the horsepower.
If this is MAME only, you're wasting your money.
-
Use it, the more power you have the more options you will have in the future. If it is not a financial issue, use it.

Sure its overkill, but hey, it will boot fast and you won't have any worries about being on the edge of playability while running the most current version of mame. If you already have it and don't need it for something requiring more speed just go ahead and use it.
-
If you already have a system like that, sure use it. However, I don't think most people have systems like that just taking up space.
It's not a matter of "just use it" It just really isn't necessary for MAME only. You could get a computer that will run almost everything for a few hundred bucks. If you really want to add those 10-20 games, then sure, build that system. However, that money can go a long way into finishing your cab.
That's my .02 anyway.
PS - this is all void if you use other emulators or use your cab for more computer intensive uses... in which case I say go for it.

Considering I'm still getting by with my AMD 2400+ and 512mb RAM as my day to day desktop PC, I definitely would not stick a 3000 into a MAME cab!
-
I'm running a Duron 1800, 512mb on my cabinet and a XP2400, 768mb as my main rig and I am yet to find a mame game that that 'falls' between the 2 of them.
Wouldn't mind an A64 though to pay some high end PC games.
