Hello-
This is my first post at these forums although I've browsed the site and forums quite a bit to get started on my MAME project. I've looked all over for a fairly new, good condition, recently made, Japanese cabinet and came accross some okay deals (400-500), but shipping is usually killer. Someone locally is selling almost new Super Neo Candy 29" cabs for $670. He says that's how much he paid for them without shipping. I have to say the cabinets are among the best I've seen for sale in terms of sit down Japanese cabs. I'm just wondering if anyone more experienced in this can tell me if this is a fair offer or not. Thanks in advance.

-
I bought a beat up one converted into a Police Trainer for 250.
(Monitor was dead and the control panel was non existant.)
670 for those looks good.

I have one of those in my living room. The guy having a whole room full of them is obviously an importer though, and the importers get those for a WHOLE LOT LESS than that price he quoted you.
They probably aren't as new as you think either, they were making those at least as far back as '96. I have one identical to those and it has a manufactur date inside it of Nov, 96.
-
There was another BYOAC member Truz that was local to this guy too (Long Island) and interested in buying a cab. I'd be carefull. This guy started selling them on ebay with full mame/jpac setup and said they retail for $4000. Apparently he pulled one auction early, but this last one did go through at $710. Of course no picture, so not sure if was the older neo's or not. No feedback on the sale yet either.

If you are local, just visit his place, pickout a cab, and offer money on the spot.
-
yup i was the one interested in his auctions, but decided to back off as it was kind of shady that he didnt post of a picture of the exact cabinet that you were getting. That way if the bid was to low for a newer cabinet, he could just stick you with and older cabinet. Never did get the chance to make it over to his place and try and cut a deal in person, but if you do go visit him, please let me now how it turned out.
Oh also in all the auction questions where people were asking about just straight up prices off ebau he quoted them for $1000 for the brand new cabinets and $400 for the used cabinets. Not sure what condition the used ones were in but i think he said they are the older more boxy style.
-
I emailed him several times and was able to talk to him on the phone. Basically he bought a candy cab and made his own MAME cabinet and sold it for something like 1500-2000. So he came up with the idea of ordering a whole container full of them and converting them all to MAME. He then realized it was a lot of work and people who aren't computer savvy run into too many tech problems. He told me that one ebay auction that actually went through was an accident and he meant to cancel it so I don't know what happened there. I think he was just trying to advertise his cabinets through auctions. The older ones are 400, the slightly used ones (shown in the picture) are 670, and the new ones are 975. I'm just going to drive up and have a look myself and pay on the spot to make sure I get what I want. He seemed like a pretty cool guy on the phone so I'll let you know. My main concern is that if these cabinets are clean and working when I get there is 670 worth it, or should I try and talk him down some?
-
I was watching that auction that ended also. I'm in NJ and tried to talk to him a few times, but he didn't respond with any real answers.
I still would love one of those cabs, but I'm not so sure if it'll be from him.
-
He was actually quite helpful for me...sent the pictures of the used cabinets minutes after we talked on the phone.

He still has them I guess

Anyone get a chance to see or deal with this guy in person? I sent him an email too. I didn't really get my questions thoroughly answered. He pretty much just left it up for me to call him, which is fine... but I asked him how much was shipping to Ohio and since he's in New York he just said you're close come and take a look... which is a good idea, but I'm trying to get a better grasp of what to expect before I bribe my uncle for 14 hours of quality time together and use of his truck.
-
Well good luck with all that, its nice to see that East Coast has some options with these cabs. If their were someone like this in Illinois i would be inquiring also. I really like the Super Neo 29's, thats a nice addition to anyones game room me thinks.

300 for shipping.. its in his auctions
-
Well he said 300 or less... which is why I asked him specifically for a quote to Ohio. I think it should be a little cheaper than say, shipping to the West Coast. When he assumed that I was close or just willing to drive up to buy one... that worried me. Believe me if I had the time or was close enough I would already be playing on one of these by now...
Anyways, I did call him... he seems pretty cool on the phone and willing to work out a deal. I think he's just not big into emails. He's sending me pictures right now of the actual units he has left that are used... I hope they are good, because if not I'll have to figure out how I'm going to get my Arcade fix soon. I've been plotting this for over a year now... my tastes are broad and my options limited... it's been driving me nuts!

this must be the guy who sold at least a dozen or more j-pacs and arcadevgas. i was curious as to what was going on.
-
Yea I bet he's selling them all because of those people who arent "computer savvy". He gave me his number, I plan on calling him tommorrow anyone have any questions lined up for me to ask?
-
Are you local to him?
-
No, im not local to him sadly.
-
I just called him to let him know I'm coming down on Saturday so I'll let everyone know how it went if I get a chance to post it that night...hope I can get a hold of a naomi system soon. :)

Let me know how many used ones he has, and what shape they are in, if you don't mind. If they are in good shape, I may have to take a trip out there.

Just went up on Saturday. Ride was full of traffic but when I got there he had the arcades all out in this one room. I'd say there's about a dozen left. The problem with a lot of them had some yellowing near the top. Not much of a big deal, but he let me go with one of the "new" ones for $750. It came with a 7 button setup and he already wired the extra buttons so all I have to do is plug them into a JPAC, all of the keys, new manual, new marquee holder, keys, coinbox takes 100 yen. I tried to take pictures of how clean the cabinet looks overall. The one with the scratches was the most damage I could find on the machine. There's still a couple really nice cabs left and the guy was pretty easy to deal with. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Also while I'm on does anybody know what kind of buttons or joysticks these are...I can take more pictures if you tell me what you need to tell? The joysticks feel a little cheap and the buttons don't click (but I think that's how the Japanese arcades are supposed to be). I just want to make sure I have the best controls on.
-
You have good parts...those are Sanwa buttons, and Seimitsu LS-40 sticks.
-
Thanks for the update and pictures, glad you could snag one of these puppies. Seems he cut you a great deal in person!
Over the weekend he told me the used one I wanted (675 originally) was actually $800 when he double checked his records... so uh, yeah. Considering the deal he cut you, I'm kind of at a loss as to what's going on.
I'm going to try one more time to get something ironed out. If not, I'll have to let it pass... unless you care to make a few bucks and pick one up to ship to me? ;)
I still REALLY want one... the way things are going, it just isn't reassuring.

Dave K. - Would it be any better to upgrade to Sanwa joysticks to go with the Sanwa buttons or are the ones I have now pretty good compared?

I'd stick with the ones you have, since those are standard for Neo cabs. Sanwas have a little more play in them and I'm still trying to decide if this is better or worse.
Basically the difference is that sanwa uses microswithes without blades, and seimistu uses microswitches with blades. With blades you can custom fit the play to be tight or loose. With the sanwa you may be able to do the same by wrapping tape around the end, but I don't know how effective that would be.
About the only other difference is that with the sanwa, you can buy an octoganal restrictor which lets you feel all 8 directions better (may be better for some fighters). Yet some people hate the octogonal and like the smoother square default better. *shrug*
Again, I'd just stick with what you have right now, as I'm sure you are not wanting to shell out another $53 for a pair of sanwa's with mounting plates.
-
How do you custom fit them to be tighter or looser?

By slightly bending the blades of the microswitches in or out (with needle nose pliers).
-
Any updates on any of this?
-
All of the $400 units are spoken for. I'm paying for them this week. I'm sure he still has some $500, $675 and $900 units left. Anyone needs some more information on this, drop me a line (PM)
-
My friend and I purchased these Neo29's this guy had. These are the $400 units pictured below. On mine, personally, I'm going to add a 7-button setup to each player. Also I'm going to throw a Mame PC and Dreamcast inside. Someone on this board was really breaking my balls about doing this. He said I shouldn't drill the holes in the CP. I can't help myself, I have to :P. Anyone else have any objections to doing this? I want to keep the Neo Geo look best I can, I don't want to take the marquee and spell "MAME" in the 4-slot or anything. I plan on buying some mini marquees. Hey once I get these units shipped to me, I'll give you all a heads up. I've had very bad luck in dealing with other people that have to do with the arcade industry. Like that guy I bought that crap monitor from in Indiana http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,29779.0.html <-- link to tragedy :'(. I've kept in close contact with this guy in NY selling these candy cabs. So it should be cake.
-
I say "drill it". Can't play Street Fighters with 4 buttons! Besides, it's not some classic. It's a big-ol plastic sucker that's just begging for kits. If you can't customize it, would good is it??
-
It may be too late now but you might want to check how your CP is put together.
If you can remove the original CP insert you might fabricate your own.
Here's a pic from a different cab:

-
My cabinet I bought should be in any day now from the 19th - 24th. I'll check under the CP to see if the CP insert can be removed...I hope.
-
Just drill it and color match the extra buttons...it looks better that way. I had 7 buttons per player plus a credit switch in mine ( handy, since I had no idea what coins it took). Put a trackball in the middle if you want, who cares.
That's waht's nice about generic cabs!
-
I've talked to some NeoGeo peeps, and they really insist I leave it the way it is. I dunno...I do love Street Fighter :-*.
-
Just to post an update since this thread it back up...my super neo is doing great. I've cleaned all the marks on it and here's where it is now.

Might get another one sometime in the future because rotating the moniter is a pain but I'm really enjoying Ikaruga and Guilty Gear XX right now. Maybe a blast city in a year or two.

They are definately addictive, especially since they are smaller than US cabs. The blast city's are nice as the monitors can switch to 31khz...perfect for high-res ikaruga dreamcast playing.
-
Hey y'all, finally got my Neo29's in. Well...one of them is mine, the other is a friends. The machine was a little dirtier than I expected. I really think it sucks that they have to smoke so much in those arcades in Japan, these poor white cabinets can't take it. Even though, it was a little dirty, I cleaned it up a little bit today, gettin' the funk out of it. I checked out the monitor first thing, I gotta say the picture quality is a 10/10, perfect! The colors are soo sharp. The joysticks and buttons totally need to be replaced, the buttons look as if they were eaten away. Sounds strange, eh? No problem though. Also, I went to go drill some holes in it, but there wasn't enough room. I'm going to go to someone locally to get a new control piece cut, then laminate it with some custom art that wont be too gaudy and will match perfectly with the sideart.
-
Ah, finally got this baby in. It's in pretty sweet condition..considering how old it tis and how much play has gone into it.
-
Here is a small update on my progress. It was difficult to find a button layout that would fit, underneath the CP is plastic around the edges. Alas, I got this to work, and I'm very happy with the results of how it turned out. I wish I had used the steel instead, but I think it would have been really hard to cut with tin snips
-
Hey, finally got that Neo29 CP artwork, vectorized (Thanks Jessie!). Also I recut Steel sheet metal instead of the Aluminum...that stuff was a little too soft. Here is a pic of the vectorized CP art and he even added buttons in there, u can mess around with. Happy day :D!

Ummm... is this thing for sale?

Ummm... is this thing for sale?
Nah, just I started to add info about the one I bought and kinda kept going, I suppose I could add it to the Project Announcements...
-
Hope that first comment of mine didn't come off as rude. It wasn't meant that way. But this thread really does belong in project announcements.
-
Will do.

i want one... wit 6 buttons ^_^
