Title: Create your own Bezel/C.P Overlay
Post by: dmish82 on April 11, 2005, 10:31:41 am
Hi everyone. Just thought I'd share my experience over the weekend, building upon an old post on creating your own bezel using posterboard. Well I ran across a program called Rasterbate which allows you to split a large image into smaller images to fit on 8.5x11" paper or in my case 11x17" paper and from there you piece them together. I had drawn up a design for a bezel and a control panel overlay using Adobe Illustrator and decided to give it a shot. Well the program works great; You must convert your design into a picture format first (i.e .tiff, .jpg, .bmp, etc). From there you select the paper size you will be using, and then you play with the output size until it's where you want it to be. I then cut out the pieces and glued them to black posterboard and took it all to Kinko's to have them laminate it. So yesterday I cut out all the holes for buttons/joysticks in the overlay(very very very time consuming) and installed both the bezel and the control panel overlay and was very pleased with the results. If anyone is wondering the total cost for all of this, I was able to find both a black and color HP ink cartridge on Ebay for $20 which included shipping, $10 for 250 sheets of 11x17" bright white paper, $2 for 4 22x28" pieces of posterboard, $25 for laminating.  So total cost -- $57. So not too shabby all in all. Hope this helps anyone looking for a less expensive way to get some artwork created for their arcade.

$57?! And all that labor?

Professionally printed "real" bezel: $45.95

Oops. Saw "bezel" but hadn't seen "CP Overlay".

I printed a Bezel AND a Control Panel Overlay. Add the price of both of those AND shipping and you're well over $110.

I'll try to get some pics taken and post them up but I'll have to hunt down someone with a digital camera. But yea, i figured $57 wasn't bad considering I got 2 pieces of artwork printed at half the price it would cost otherwise. If you already have a printer with ink installed, then you're even better off than I was. It's nice too b/c you can see how your design looks inside the arcade before paying to get it professionally printed. You may find you want to change some things about the final design once you see how it looks in an arcade.
