Title: Anything special about changing snow tires?
Post by: Jabba on April 09, 2005, 10:37:42 am
Now that the dreaded snow is gone, I need to change over my snow tires to my summer ones.

The dealer put the snow tires on in the fall and did not mark which of the summer tires were the rear ones, which were the front, etc.

Does it matter how I put them back on? Do they need to be re-balanced? Is there a best method to install them?

And yes, I could take it back to the dealer to reinstall, but that would mean $$$ and take all the fun out of it  ;)

Thanks for the advice guys...

Take some chalk and mark the snow tires.

If the tires are identical, rotate them next winter.

If your summer tires are identical, it won't matter which are mounted were, but you SHOULD rotate them.  How to tell now is anybody's guess if they weren't marked.

Look in your manual also.  If your rims are designed with airflow to cool your rotors, you will have to make sure the right side tires STAY on the right side, and your left side tires....you get the point.   I had a CRX that had rims like that.  Dunno what you've got, but check your owner's manual.

Also some tires have an arrow on the sidewall pointing to the front on the car, so you know what side of the car they need to be on.

I am still trying to figure out why snow tyres don't melt in summer.

Bones, we store them with some dry ice.

We usually have tons of dry ice lying around.  If we melt it, we can swim without getting wet.

Thanks guys,

Had a better look at the tires. No signs of any chalkmark or any signs of arrows pointing anywhere.   ???

I'll be marking those snow tires before I take them off.

I'll check the manual. It is a G35, the rims do allow for airflow, so I'll check extra special.

Any other ideas? Can the tread give me any hints?

Thanks!

MOST tire treads are designed to be identical no matter which side you mount them.

Do they need to be re-balanced?
Yes.  Rarely do you put a tire on a rim and it is perfectly balanced although occasionally it does happen.

Always balance.
