Title: Having Sound problems in DOS
Post by: AlexC on April 08, 2005, 09:29:04 pm
I'm having problems getting sound to work under DOS (win98 variety)
The sound card is a ISA slot Sound Blaster CT4170
The soundcard works in Win 98 and when I go into Dos (small window) from 98, but not when I reboot straight into Dos. I've searched and looked at a few websites (dosmame setup, etc) but still cannot get it going. I've downloaded some dos drivers and tried to install them but they were not compatible.
I'm about to give up. I've been at it for hours and cannot get this thing to work.
Any assistance/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all...

Post your autoexec.bat and Mame config file so we can see what could be wrong (this feels like saying "open up and say ahh")

The autoexec.bat is :

@echo off
path=c:\windows\command;c:\windows
set tmp=c:\temp
set temp=c:\temp
set blaster=a220 i5 d1 h1 p330 t6

as far the Mame config I can't copy & paste since that computer doesn't have a burner or a floppy drive, just a HD. The config is pretty much default except for chossing "1" for soundblaster which worked in dos under Win98.
Hope this helps

Have you tried the different card options in the Mame config?
I use a SoundBlaster, but for some reason it only works with Mame if I select Allegro.

This is the same sound card here :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=44981&item=5182871627&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

It works in MAME after loading win98 but not when just loading dos  :-\

I'm just going to throw some suggestions out there.  First, have you checked what the IRQ and Port settings for your card are in Windows?  If you go to Device Manager you can check the properties of the card, then make sure your DOS Autoexec settings match those.  And check the card itself, I remember on older ISA Soundblasters that they had jumpers on the cards for setting the IRQs.  Also, the T setting seems like it should be a 1 or more likely 3 as it appears your card is a newer version of the original Soundblaster.

This guy explains how to set up a computer to play Kings Quest from DOS:

He explains exactly how to set up a CT4170 sound card, and has links to the necessary drivers.
