Title: T molding and timber size
Post by: Craig on April 08, 2005, 08:20:03 am: I have been using 18mm MDF building my cabs. I saw on www.tmolding.com they have 3/4" t molding which is 19.050mm wide.
Now, has anyone used this on their 18mm thick cabs? Do I go ahead and order a few feet and then scrape off the excess t molding with a blade when fitted to the MDF? Has anyone done this?

Post by: Franco on April 09, 2005, 05:33:34 am: I used 18mm MDF on my cab and also used 3/4" t-moulding. If you get the groove dead centre you are only going to get a 0.5mm overhang which is sod all really. I think the v.slight overhang gives it a nice look too.

Post by: Franco on April 09, 2005, 05:59:54 am: I didnt bother cutting mine. I think you may run the risk of creating an uneven edge if you trim it. It also depends on what type of t-moulding you are using. I used foil covered chrome t-moulding and if i trimmed it it would have reveled the clear plasic beneath it.

This is a pic of the t-moulding on mine. Ill see if I can get a better close up pic of the overhang, but honestly I dont think you'll notice it.

I could always send you a short strip of my left over t-moulding, that way you could check the overhang yourself.

I was going to use black 3/4 for my Pac man themed cabinet and Green (Galaxian matched) 3/4 for my Galaga themed cabinet for a friend all from tmolding.com.

I will just go ahead with it. 0.5mm isn't much I guess.

The American's do everything differently to everyone else of course.

Oh yeah, maybe I should start calling it moulding and NOT molding because that's how American's call it. Just like color and colour etc.. ;D ;D ;D

(un)fortunetly I work in engineering and have to use both metric and imperial measurements every day so it is not too alien to me.

Saying that I do prefer metric! ;)

Post by: Franco on April 09, 2005, 08:53:05 am: Thanks. I made them at work to replace the ---smurfy--- standard black Happ rotary handles. The only thing was as they are solid stainless, they didnt always spring back to the center due to the weight of them and the angle of the CP. Ive since made some polished aluminnium ones to replace them which has solved the problem nicely and are even more shiny! :)

I certainly haven't been notified of the spelling change. Did you hear that on April 1, perhaps?

Of course, nobody in the US knows how to spell anymore, anyway, so it wouldn't really matter. There is a sign across the street from me advertising the things at a garage sale- anybody want to buy a "Wate Set"? Every day, I drive past these three signs: "We Sale Soda & Snacks", "Sorry We'er Close", and my personal favorite (it really tells a story) "Slow Childern and Dogs".
