In keeping with the current map theme, thought it might be interesting to "see" where people live. You can use http://maps.google.com

Just bored enough....

When it is up on your screen hit the "Prnt Scrn" key, then open something like Photoshop or Paint and paste it (Ctrl-V).

I hear there is free beer at 11 greenway drive in marshall, north carolina--fortunately the guy was kind enough to provide a map :D

The first pic is in color, the second one....well, let's just say you'd never guess my house was built in the shadow of....well, just see for yourself.

1hooked, I believe I used to see that place all the time! Is that near Gurnee (well, reasonably close, anyhoo?)
And here's the shadow under which I live...careful, you may wish to shield your eyes....the B/W pic won't hurt you, but the color of the "shadow" may scar you for life! ;D

Are there any similar links for our non-North American friends. www.maps.google.com only covers North America....?

You can download worldwind (http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/) (I think it's called) from NASA and it has the whole earth with satellite imagery... You can literally zoom in on a globe of the earth.
what about terraserver.com (http://www.terraserver.com) ??
I looked for constantinople, Turkey and couldn't find it... that's odd.. I've got a date there soon, hmmmmph!

I printed it out and keep it in my wallet. It's my goal to have my picture taken with danny_galaga's sister and post it here, no matter HOW much it makes my skin crawl and makes YOU want to gouge your eyes out with a fork. ;D
Why do you give the PornTron Guy pic a pass? That guy should make you shudder WAY more than Ms BellybuttonAtHerKnees! Shape D keeps trying to remind us of his public service announcement, but guys still keep posting that fugly pic!

That.....is a classy apartment. No wonder you have to file bankruptsy :P
I can only imagine how garish your arcade cabinet must look in that place.

Hoping to upgrade to sidewalk soon.

Drew I thought that was you flying overhead yesterday! ;) Where'd you snag that little shot of goodness? Its correct heh, but alas, it must be old because the 200' wireless net antenna is not in my sideyard.
-
These must be from 2000ish... My neighborhood was built in 2002-2003...
Hm...
For now I apparently live in the middle of a field...
-
Since my city surprisingly seems to have the best interactive map (wow I wonder how much of my tax bill went to that!?), I get to post a pic of my area complete with street names! Due to my unbelievable popularity, my promotional manager suggests I not point out my exact address, but be sure it's in there! ;)
I live in a super spiffy area called Boler Mountain, (even though it's more of a big hill than a mountain), specifically "The hills of Byron Somerset".
Can you guys tell by now that I reeeeeeally like my new house?? ;D
-
(http://www.stingraysmadness.com/misc/home.JPG)
Well here's my little five acre forest. I promise there's a house in there somewhere. The blue arrow indicates the tip of my driveway where it emerges from the trees to meet the road.

That's from the terraserver site. I had problems working the Google site mahsef, and I think that's ghey that they don't go any further down, but it's free, so you got what you paid for it! ;)
Stingray, is your house that little silver square a bit into the forest? I dig setups like that....did you consider doing a Batcave stealthing of your driveway so troublemakers can't find it?

Mine:
{edit: I wonder what those yellow lines are? They don't exist in actuality.}
-
I don't see any yellow lines...
-
They are yellowish, maybe beige. Look at the curbs of the street, some sides have a thick line.

Oh that was you? :)

Just came across this website..
www.keyhole.com
Claims it can get as low as 1 FOOT !!! :o
It doesn't cover my area so I didn't download it! 7 day free registration. I wonder where they got that data from, Military looking to scrounge up more money?
Can Anyone here get down to this level where they live?

Google bought 'em, so either they're using it for their satellite photos or they're gonna limit functionality somehow.

1HSC, I was up in Wadsworth last year! We took our daughter to see the Lippizans at Temple Farms. I didn't realise that is where the pyramid is. I have been hearing about that thing ever since 1985, but I have never seen it.
Apparently I live in the midle of the street!

So I am moronic bordering on drain bramaged.

That little square is probably a tiny bit of my roof that you can see through the trees. There is small gap in the trees right over the house where they still haven't grown completely back together, even though the house has been there for ten years. Thanks for the batcave driveway idea. I'll be off searching for the BYOBC site. :)

Another thing I find interesting in these types of photos is the apparently invisible trees.
There are two huge maple trees in front of my house (one on each side of the street).
If the photos are taken at a time of year when they don't have leaves, you can't see the trees very well. You mainly see the shadows of the tees on the ground.
-
The trees are all that's visible in the picture of my place.
-S
-
The image is quite old, some of that highly visible stuff hasn't been there in a long time.
-
There are actually 5 trees that you cannot see in this photo.
There are three Poplars and a Sweet Gum tree in the front yard, and there should be a Maple visible in each parkway plus a Black Walnut just north of the driveway.
By the way, in the midwest a driveway is where we park our cars, and a parkway is either the strip of grass between the street and the sidewalk or a street.
-
{edit: I wonder what those yellow lines are? They don't exist in actuality.}
So I am moronic bordering on drain bramaged. Those were the sidewalks. :-[ From space they look like they were yellowish, so I thought they were added somehow after the fact.
In my defense, look how different the sidewalks look in ErikRuud's photo than in mine. They look like sidewalks.
Well, in his defense, you live in New York...aren't the sidewalks SUPPOSED to be various shades of yellow due to....ahem....er....um....the place to go?
He lives in IL. The only part that should look that yellow is the state border where us Wisconsinites stop by to pee over, although we stopped doing that when the 90's came....didn't seem right to pee on their land while they were cursed with such a crappy football team at the same time!
