Title: Support files - Definitions & How to use?

Is there a help file that contains the definitions and uses of all the support files?

In setting up your PC you need the basics (Mame and Roms).
What about all the other support files:
Mameinfo
History
Hiscore
Catlist
Dat files
Controls.ini, etc.

I'm still setting up my PC and all this stuff is confusing.
Maybe I need graphs, flow charts or  even block diagrams to show how everything works.

I think this would be useful for all of us. Maybe I need to write this up myself, just don't know where to start.
