I just received my 49 ways yesterday and they seemed a little short to me. How do you adjust the height? Do you need to cut down the size of the spacer below and add it to the space between the joystick and the mounting bracket?
Obviously I don't want to cut the spacer unless that's the way it's done.

Assuming you are mounting to wood, you would need to rout the base into the wood.
They were originally designed to mount to a metal CP.
I think the actuator at the bottom NEEDS to be that long to engage properly at full throw, without hanging up on the slider plates.
Your other option is to wait a bit for the aftermarket balltops that are coming soon.
I think the GGG one will likely have the adjustable C-clip grooves that their other sticks have, allowing you some latitude in height adjustment for your particular taste/application.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was wondering if it could be done via the joystick shaft or routing out the wood. I'll do it either way, but I thought I'd check before I did something stupid.

That's exactly what I did but for different reasons. There's no reason for them to be as long as they are. There's about 1/2" of extra even at full throw. I just cut the white bushing and put the small piece on the top part of the shaft. In my case, I needed extra clearence at the bottom to install the sticks in my Namco Cyberlead cabinet.

I thought there was a bit of excess that could be removed, but I wasn't sure if I was playing with fire by trying that. I'll go that route knowing that you've done it and it's working for you.

watch out about how you cut the...white spacer thing. if you use a saw or something, you'll lose a large (compared to the spacer length) amount of spacer. i'd suggest using a steak knife or something...then again, i'm unsure of how hard the spacer is. or find somewhere with spacers, and then make your own to specific lengths. just make sure hat you conserve the total spacer length both before and after cuting.

I happen to have a spare that I picked up cheap so I've been thinking on really hacking the heck out of it and trying some other stuff out along the way. Since it uses the same basics as a wico stick for centering I thought maybe one of the first things to try might be to cut that long spacer down to about 1" and use a spring much like the original Wico's did. See if it gives any more snap in the return to center. I have also toyed with the idea of cutting down the plastic base that sits between the circuit board and the joystick base to see if I might make it short enough to use some original Wico balltops. If I can get it short enough I could replace the rubber grommet and use a regular wico spring. Of course, I could turn a perfectly good $12 Joystick into an unusable mess too :)
