I started looking into building a PVR for the TV downstairs. Based on very preliminary research, $200 is all you need if you already have the PC and the 10/100 baseT network.

Hmmmm. Wife dominating upstairs TV for Oprah, Dr. Phil, Survivor, Desperate House Wives (and no, whatever yer thinkin. :police:..), American Idol (although, I think Bo Dice is gonna win it all!!!) .....Sounds like I need to build me one of these PVR thingys.... 8)

yeah i put one together with help from his site and am VERY pleased--my only expense was the hauppauge 250 card as I had the rest of the parts left over from mame operations (very complimentary hobby) or traded civic83 for stuff.

heh! thanks guys!
I love shameless plugs ;D
I was debating posting a link here to the new revamped build your own PVR message board (http://forum.byopvr.com/dvr/), because I put a lot of effort into converting all the old posts and stuff.
BYOAC'ers will be right at home as I'm using the same forum software there, as Saint uses here (SMF). This is the article jabba was talking about build your own PVR in 3 steps for under $200 (http://www.byopvr.com/Sections+index-req-viewarticle-artid-10-page-1.html).
Thanks for the props and linkage!

PS--> whether you build your own or get a TiVo or cable company generic DVR, a PVR/DVR will change the way you watch TV and you'll never look back =)

I almost got a replayTV 2 christmas's ago... and I like that they come out of the box with ethernet/etc... *shrug* but someone bought me a TiVo Series 2, so *shrug*
FWIW this guy setup a DIY PVR backend to feed his replayTV (http://www.byopvr.com/Journal+index-jop-browse-mode-view-id-142.html) content... although if you already have 3 networked you're probably in good shape :P

A PVR is next on my project list, if I ever get my cabinet finished :)
Either that or a mini-cabinet...
Even though my wife now can't live without the convenience of the 3 replays, I still think she'd think I was nuts for wanting to build a PVR.. Although, I haven't brought up the topic of another cabinet, yet, either... Heh...
