I'm trying to get an old motherboard working to make a MAME bartop or jukebox. When I power it up, I get nothing on the monitor.
The PS starts, the HD spins, nothing else.
I tried a video card instead of onboard video, but still nothing.
Am I wrong to think that the first thing the MB does is start the video?

Do you have memory installed?
-
Yes, one stick of memory. I'm going to leave it "running" to see if the CPU gets hot.

How are you mounting the Mobo? Place a sheet of cardboard under the motherboard to make sure it is not grounding out.

No mount yet ;D It's just sitting on my desk. Put some cardboard under there though. Thanks
-
make sure that the memory is compatible with your mobo
also, some mobos require memory in pairs
if you google it a bit you might find a manual for it
-
It's a Camaro motherboard. I guess I need an oil change or something.

About 2 years ago I owned an '89 IROC-Z (Z-28)..........you had to slam your fist in the dead center of the hood to get it to pop open....
Just a thought..... ;) ;D

Does the MOBO have a built in speaker or speaker attached? If so, it should be giving some indications of what the problem is such as short beeps for a video problem and long beeps for memory issues.
-
Almost all motherboards have built in speakers or an LED display. This will show you POST errors. It sounds like the motherboard may be bad.
Try powering on the motherboard with nothing plugged into it. It should beep at you like crazy. If it doesn't then your mobo is probably bad.
I can help you through this problem if you want, computers are definately my cup of tea.

I have to find an extra PC speaker. I tossed out this MOBO's with the case.
There is no LED. Thanks

I had the following problem on the weekend
Computer worked fine,
put it in mame cab
Computer shat itself
Pulled the whole thing apart, vaccumed it all tried it with ram, without ram etc... nothing
About to give up, pulled off custom rewiring i did to put the reset and power buttons on the front of the cabinet
This worked
Looks to be almost like the reset switch was staying on, not allowing the compuer to boot up
I had many similar problems, HD worked, CPU fired up, nothing on screen
Not sure if this helps
Cheers ginno..

Speakers arn't built into the motherboard that ive seen in a long time...yea, hook up a PC speaker to it, and what year was the mobo made? that will help with if you need 1 or 2 sticks of ram
-
there is usually a speaker that will beep and beep only. At least motherboards made through 2004 usually have that capability. It is not a full speaker.
The needing matched pair Ram also has not been an issue since 1995.
-
Some boards do, some don't. The one I just got doesn't, but the one I replaced did.
-
The majority that I have used myself or encountered (I work as a computer and network technician) have had either the speakers or some way of independently notifiying of problems, through beeps, leds, or even some with displays.
-
Check your PMs Jack, I'll just send you a whole working system. I have one gathering dust that used to power my Defender before I got a Multi-Williams board.

Replied paige. Thanks

Sounds like a bad CPU to me.
