So, I'm starting my cab (I'll post something in project announcements soon...), and have come upon a slight problem... My cab would be modular, and i plan on having a "driving-module-thing" for it, which will basically be two elevated seats, 2 pedals, 2 shifters, 2 handbrakes, and 2 (very expensive imported) steering wheels... Now, I've allready paid for the very expensive imported wheels and their 100-something dollar shipment, so i can't really drop the idea now... Thing is, i can't seem to find a pair of seats that would fit my (drained) budget... EBay has some really sweet deals, until you realize these guys make their money from 200$ shipping fees... The best deal I've come upon is 85$ over my budget, and the only way seems to be one of these ugly leather-ish seats (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7965136593&category=33701), which don't even come with a slider...
EDIT: The same seller sells it with sliders too for an additional 35$, that's still 25$ over my budget for the ugliest seats I've seen... It's right here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7964950706&category=50458), BTW...
Any ideas?

why dont you just go to a junkyard and buy a couple seats out of a sports coupe. More comfortable for sure, and adjustible.
i got a pair for my saturn for $40, but nicer ones will cost a hundred or more.

They may or may not have any but I am sure they could point you to the local Pick A Part or whatever it is called in your area.

Thanks, i'll go ask then...

The junk yard is a good idea. Just watch older seats that have seen a lot of sun and weather exposure. The foam goes bad really fast.
Otherwise, I'd look at JC Whitney. They have some molded plastic seats that would fit the bill and look authentic for arcade stuff. They run $50.
Check Here (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/showCustom-0/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2006990/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2006990/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/sct-body/s-10101/th-StoreCatalogDisplay/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup/ss-10101?Ntt=racing%20seats)
Edit: fixed wide link.

The JC Whitney seats appear identical to some I've seen being sold on EBay as arcade seats, but much less in price. I plan to get one myself for a sit down cab.

Thanks! Those actually look the same as the ones I've been looking at, but the shipping is much better...
Thanks for the help guys! BTW, JODY, I'd love to see that sit-down, i think there aren't enough of them around here in BYOAC... Please post too much pics! (i have broadband ;))
-
BTW, assuming I'll go for the JC Whitney seats, what would be better, the high back or low back? Is the headrest the only difference?
EDIT: One more thing, should i spend the extra 60$ for brackets or can i do without them?
-
JC Whitney usually has specials for first time orders. 10 - 15% off.

Did some searching on the net and found codes for 10% off and / or free shipping but they required a minimum purchase of around $100+.
Do you remember where you found those? Ten percent might not be that big of a deal, but it's something...
If you're not in a hurry, I'd request a catalog.
I'm not in that much of a hurry, no... But since every time in this project that i ordered something that should take long early so it won't come weeks after everything (inhale ;)), i got it in a few days or less (including my huge steering wheels from germany!)... So i have a feeling this time something will get messed up with the shipping...
I dunno...

http://www.momsview.com/jcwhitney.shtml - I haven't tried these. There is a 10% off $80 with no expiration date.
What steering wheels did you get from Germany? Bought from a manufacturer or just a one time sale?

See if you've got a few chairs around the house with similar height dimensions. The difference is only about a foot, so if you only have a chair close to ONE measurement, add some phone books to the seat if it's the taller measurement and see how it "fits" you.
That should give you an idea.
The brackets are prolly just metal with some studs or something to bolt onto. See if you can get a picture of it and you should be able to determine whether it's just something they want to make $55 bucks on selling you, or if it's something you can save $60 by building your own or skipping using it altogether.
-
They don't have pics on the site, but it seems you need it... I'm not sure if i need their specific brackets though... If you look under you car seats I'm sure you'll see brackets... I'm a little afraid the only way to mount them without brackets is drilling into the seats or something... I dunno...
-
I'm betting the seat has holes you throw a bolt through and nut 'er up on the underside. It probably attaches to the bracket, and the bracket has holes on the END of them to make it either easier to fasten down, or access.
Mebbe call them up and see if they can describe it to ya or something. Otherwise, see what their return policy is, in case it IS $60 you're throwing down the drain (or a credit, which might be the same thing)

HOLY THREAD TABLE-BREAKING, BATMAN! :P
rsoandrew, just as a heads-up, if you have a URL, it helps to use the "url" tags like so:
Click here (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/showCustom-0/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2006990/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2006990/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/sct-body/s-10101/th-StoreCatalogDisplay/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup/ss-10101?Ntt=racing%20seats) to see the JC Whitney seats.
That way the whole thread doesn't become completely unreadable.

The description of the brackets says some drilling required. Wouldn't be surprised if you have to drill holes in the seats.

Summit is a fantastic supplyer of racing goods. I had nothing
but great results with them during my stock car building phase.

I went through the same thing you did. I really disliked the arcade seats from Ebay as well and refused to have two actual car seats stuck to my cabinet.
I called a lot of arcade vendors and also sent emails to sellers of arcade parts/machines through Ebay asking them for arcade seats with sliders. I found that many arcade vendors do not keep the seats/slider assemblies when they scrap a game since most people do not want big arcade seats (so selling them would typically be annoying) and storing them is not worth their effort either. Basically, many arcade vendors offered me free arcade seats if I could simply come and pick them up. Usually the vendor would not offer to ship the seat since it was too must of a hassle. Not really a big deal since the shipping costs were crazy prices. The biggest problem I found was they were usually many states away. I live in South Florida, so even driving one state away is a long drive for me.
Anyway, I finally found an arcade vendor in central Florida which sold me one for $100 ... I love it.
I do not know where you are located, but chances are some arcade vendor around you will have a seat they would let go. I would recommend emailing via Ebay as well....
See my arcade seat below:

Sorry about this ...... I just found this old link and noticed you requested information from me. Please tell me again what you would like ... if it is not too late.
So sorry I missed this....... I try to help anyone who needs some

I'm going to Second Summit. The prices were great and the seat looks really good when mounted to the rails.
Here is my example:
