I very rarely go to the desktop on my WinXP machine which has a AVGA card and CGA VisionPro monitor cause I usually do most from another remote computer, but on occasion is necessary. I run my desktop resolution at 640x288, seems to be the best picture quality for a CGA monitor. I do however get some of the screen which I can't read, so if I need to make changes, I have to change to 640x480 for a few seconds to make the change and I'm sure this can't be good for the monitor. Is it possible to enable panning from the video card driver so I can avoid doing this in the futre. I was able to do this in the past on my Windows machine which had both a Nvidia card and ATI ( secondary display was a tv ) any help appreciated.

I can't seem to get this working, but There's a link here:http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainst.html
You may need the "old" version of the ATI software (but again, I have bad luck with this).
Enable Auto-Panning in Windows XP and 2000.
Click Display, Properties, Advanced, Displays. Click on the active (top left) Monitor heading. In the "Max Resolution" drop-down, select "648 X 288". The desktop will now be a clear non-interlaced display, which auto-pans up and down. If you wish, click on the ATI taskbar icon and increase the desktop resolution to 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768. To turn off auto-pan, select 640 X 480 in the "Max Resolution" drop down box, as above.
