Title: Frankenstein (FINISHED! june 29, 2005)
Post by: Felsir on March 31, 2005, 01:34:47 am
I'm working on two projects now... the DDR cab (Winxclub theme) and a project on request. A Frankenstein cabinet. I'm making this one for someone else and I have permission to put a WIP thread here so all can enjoy

Do you have any pics or posts regarding the DDR cabinet?

Do you have any pics or posts regarding the DDR cabinet?
For the artwork: not yet, it will be another thread in this part of the forum.
For the cab itself, see this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,30480.msg256897.html)

I found much better source material (3 times the details of my current source) so I'm redrawing various parts with this new "insight" :)

So, reworked the face. Yep, things look quite different now I have a better source ;)

... yes, both images are part of the same artwork ...

Another update. I also traced the outline of the characters to indicate the size and a rough estimate of the progress.

Looks great, like the way it's detailed on top and fades to black at the bottom.

...does she have two moles?

That was intentional? I just figured he didn't finish the black parts yet... (after all, this WIP)
Title: Re: WIP: Frankenstein (updated april 12, 2005)

and another update...

@BobbyG66: I'm not sure what you mean by 'mole' (English is not my native tongue) but if you mean the spots (like Cindy Crawford has) - yes

Oldsage is correct: it's a WIP and I traced the black outline to indicate the % of work done. Sort of a visual reference to what the total image size will be. So the black part represents the "to-do" part of the image.

Yes, good to see that Cindy Crawford translates to all languages... ;D

My bad on the artwork, can't wait to see it finished!

I really, really don't mean to be a jerk and I'm not trying to hurt anybody's feelings, but what exactly is so great about his work?  I agree that it's an awesome image, but he's just tracing someone else's drawing right?  That's not particularly difficult to do, just time consumning.  Please help me understand why this is so spectacular.

Title: Re: WIP: Frankenstein (updated april 14, 2005)
Post by: Pixelhugger on April 15, 2005, 05:00:48 pm
It's amazing for several reasons.

1) Artwork like this is meant to print out at a very large size. So the traced detail has to be extremely accurate. Unfortunately the source material is generally very small.. a matter of a few inches across. Scanning the material at a high resolution doesn't help after a certain point as all you are doing is enlarging the dot pattern of the printout which doesn't help define anything for tracing. So there is generally quite a bit of interpretation that you've got to do. That may not sound significant, but I've spent PLENTY of time pencil sketching from J Scott Campbell's artwork (this image's original artist) and I'm always amazed at how different the girls look with even the slightest variation in line curvature and even line thickness. This is especially true in the small regions like the eyes and lips... which are likely no more than a fraction of an inch on the original. So reason #1 is that the "tracing" itself can be interpretive and consequently hard.

2) Vectorizing precise detail is easier seen than done. To call it tracing is a bit of an over-simplification.

@Pixelhugger: thanks for the kind words! I can only say that I'm also very, very impressed by the Mission Control cab design -and building- and I watch that thread with equal awe! Everyone can create a cab as well that everyone can pick some image to slap on the sides, but to create something (be it cab or art) with so many subtle layers is a whole different thing.

@oldsage : one of my friends wanted a cab too, he gave some indications on what kind of cab he wanted, so we discussed some images. I got sorta 'carte-blanche' in cab design. Since I will see the cabinet quite a lot I want it to be pretty to look at  ;)

Probably no update today, I've been out this weekend so I had no time to vectorise anything. Oh well, maybe later today during lunch break  ;D

Sort of an update... I forgot to take my USB memorystick with me, so I couldn't work on Frankenstein & Doc. So I started work on the marquee.

The bakcground will be altered with stone slabs, another gargoyle will be added to the right and the gargoyles will have rings in their mouths. So there is also a lot of work to be done here... (ppfft! ...and I didn't even start on the CP, wich has images of rats on it...)
Title: Re: WIP: Frankenstein (updated april 20, 2005)
Post by: Felsir on April 20, 2005, 06:55:18 am
Since I figured that the marquee was 75% done, I decided to complete that one first: both the gargoyles are finished, started work on the background.

The attached image is a bit distorted in the forum. Click the file to see it in a better quality (~ 850x220)
Title: Re: WIP: Frankenstein (Marquee finished! april 22, 2005)

Finished the marquee. I'm still fiddling with shading and hilighting. I'm going to continue with the main picture now, and see if the marquee needs tweaking later. Sometimes it helps to "step away" from it, to come back to it later.
Comments on the finished marquee are appreciated.

WOW!! Man, I'm just consistently amazed by your work Felsir. I love the mechanical detail in the arm. Is that what you lost in your spontaneous reboot a few days back?

If so I'd say that's quite a voordeel for your nadeel!  ;)

Just beautiful.

1) Where did you find source pics for this?
2) What software are you using to vectorize?

edit: I think I found my own answer to #2. I downloaded Frostillicus's tutorial on Illustrator, that helped. Is that what you're using?

On a side note, what's the going rate for artwork requests like this?

On a side note, what's the going rate for artwork requests like this?

1) the source for artwork can be very different. The source for this picture was found on a fan-site for Jeff Scott Campell. Other sources are comic books or even stills from DVDs. Sometimes the source can be a pencil sketch.

2) most of the people on this board use Illustrator. I actually use Microsoft Visio 2003 (which isn't designed to draw pretty pictures but flowcharts and network diagrams etc.). There are other vector software packages that work great, Illustrator is the most commonly used (I guess I'm the only one who uses Visio). There is a thread in this forum about (also free) software.
Having said that: Frosty's tutorial is a really good start to get the basics, those work fr whatever software you use and is a must read for starting-artists.

Like other vector artist on this board, going rates aren't generally discussed. See also the 'discussion' in the Proving Grounds artwork discussion (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,28231.msg291390.html#msg291390).
Suffice to say, a full artwork package (sideart, marquee and controlpanel) like this is not within everyone's budget.
Think 30-50 hours of work and a basic $-per-hour fee and do the math.
It takes lots of time to vectorise this stuff and most of us are doing this in their spare time. Anyway, it has been discussed before and check the Proving Grounds thread for more on this subject.

Thanks for the quick reply. Also thanks for the Proving Grounds link. I wasn't looking for a quote, maybe a rough estimate discussed offline / PM. The PG link was a sufficient answer.

Awesome work btw - the Red Monika, Frankenstein, etc.

Felsir, I gotta say...

I don't know what you do for a living, but I've been a professional graphic designer for almost ten years and I've been using Illustrator for even longer (although not as much as Photoshop).

The stuff you're doing takes not only skill, but talent, patience and an eye for artistic detail. I am constantly impressed by your posts and admire your ambition. Everytime I think something you've done looks finished you come along and add even more detail.

Amazing stuff, man. I salute you.

I too must add to the ego stroking... excellent work! More patience than I would ever have. I see mentioning of source material. Is this composition pieced together from different comics, or is this based off an original and using it as an guide/underlay? Either way it's still amazing... Pixelhugger's assessment and explanation of how the process works is perfect. For people who are learning about these things that is a great reference post.

One quick thought on the marquee... I know you have blue for the lighting flash, but have you tried a different color scheme up there since things have progressed? Since it's a lighter blue it's a little too cheery considering what else is going on, especially when it gets backlit... unless this contrast was intentional? Maybe that hint of purple carried over from the lipstick would work. It might keep it a fun and unique color, but dark enough palette to tie everything together, even when lighted. Just a suggestion to try to help add to the monstrous feel.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the praise :)

As there are no surprises in the image anymore: I attached my actual source image, and a composition of the actual image and the vector at the same scale. The source image is used both as a guide and as a underlay (as you can see, the vector isn't a 100% reproduction, but the dimensions are). As I trace I have the image loaded in Visio (as underlay) and in GIMP as guide to get a better overview and 'feel' for the colours and hilights. Also as a 'overview' since in Visio it is covered with vectors and additional help-lines I create - besides, Visio is zoomed in at least 1500% at all times ;)
I also have an image of the sketch J. Scott Campbell made to help me out as it is more detailed but too rough to vectorise. So in all, lots of referencing next to the regular tracework. There are parts that I'm not yet satisfied with - especially Doktor's face should have a more menacing expression.

I plan to have another lightningflash as seen in the overal image (2nd attachment) on the side. Due cab dimension restrictions I'm not sure yet how to include them. I haven't decided yet, but I feel the blue makes a good contrast with the black background. The cabinet will be black too.

(again the board's scaling distorts the images, click the link under them to see the enlarged version)

Not to sound too much like a Felsir fanboy....but I personally prefer her face the way you have done it.  Makes her look more like a hottie chick and less like a dirty doctor.  I just think you've added enough of a dimension to her that you have in a lot of way surpassed the original design.  Good work man!

I'm blown away by not only your sheer talent, but your choice of application as well!  Very unusual. :)

Your art reminds me greatly of an old online artist "Fritz".  I don't see much of his work around any more (Google returns absolutely nothing any more - it's like he just dropped off the face of the planet!).  But anyways, I was also a huge fan of his stuff too.

Brilliant work.

That is brilliant. I truly envy the lucky bugger who ends up with that on the side of their cab.

Thanks for sharing the updates along the way.

Thanks everyone!

Tha cab will probably a 4 player Gauntlet based cab (dimension wise). Since the customer is not yet sure of the dimensions further artwork for this cab is on hold (the bezel and CP art is very dimension/layout specific).

Plans are to have the bezel with the two lightning generators on each side of the screen and lightning connecting the two above the screen. Instruction cards wil fit below the screen. The controlpanel will have artwork of another rat sitting on top of it, old style 'needle-style' meters, various nuts/bolts and several sheets of metal. Various parts which are inspired by the original picture.

I just have to say it, for all you Jay and Silent Bob fans:

You're a tracer, a tracer!

(And a damned talented one, too.)
