Title: Opinions on a "Tron" CP
Post by: lostwire on March 29, 2005, 11:14:13 am
Since I'm closing in on building my first CP I figured it would be best to get a few opinions on it before I commit to a layout I may regret. The bottom three buttons to the right of the track ball is my biggest concern right now due to the fact they are only about 3/4' away from the bottom of the panel. As with all the other blue buttons they'll be lighted Wicos so I'm hoping it's just a matter of routing out a bit of wood from the inside of the box behind the grid (see 2nd pic) that the CP sits on top of. By the way the 2nd pic is just a mock-up with an older CP design.

Directly above the 3" Happ track ball at the top of the CP is a Tornado spinner & the sticks will be Happ 360s.

Or no analog/trigger Joy.  I don't think PLAYING Tron was the intention, just a Tron theme.  And for a tron theme, this is pretty freakin' awesome.  Can't wait to see it all finished!

My only complaint is that you can't actually PLAY Tron with that setup.

I would also just remap/rewire three of the P1/P2 buttons to perform the same function as the three you are worried about, and lose those.

That was my thought - those bottom buttons are going to be in the way, I think.  In fact, remap both the p1 and p2 bottom three buttons to be trackball buttons as well, and then you can have either right or left handed trackballers use the needed buttons...

The irony! Well there is plenty of room up top for one of 1up's new Tron controllers, an idea I've seriously been considering but with repro blue handles. My only concern then would be where should I put the spinner? I could put them both up top (left & right of the current spinner) but I'm not sure if player two's stick will get in the way while using the Tron stick.

Any other comments?

As far as removing the bottom three buttons & remapping them to those up top, wouldn't the game keep adding additional "coins" every time the button is pushed? Please forgive my ignorance but I am rather new to all of this.

Those are COIN buttons?
I assumed they went with the trackball for Missle Command, etc....

And if those are the coin buttons, what are the green ones next to the player starts?

The green ones beside the player buttons up top are the coin buttons, & the three along the bottom of the CP were intended as trackball/mouse buttons.

They were referring to either Player 1 or Player 2's buttons 1-3, not the coin buttons at the VERY TOP.

Unforunatly, the base of a tron stick is friggin huge and it will not fin on that location.

I think he's wanting to use a GGG adapted 49-way with the Tron handle.

Yes, I was considering running just such a conversion, & after seeing your mock-up I think I shall. I did manage to mess around with a 49-way template right where I initially had the spinner & there's plenty of room up there. I'll have to open her up in Illustrator again & see how a Tron stick would fit over the player two buttons. Great idea Mark, thanks again.

Here's another mock-up of the CP. The Tron stick can't move much lower without interfering with the player two stick.
