Basically i'm making a system that will play all the classic arcade games, and someof the new fighting ones (marvel vs capcom, killer instinct).
What is the best emulator software for my project?
And what speed of computer should i look into getting?

I wouldn't stop short of a P4 2.4.
Although I'm using an Athlon 2000.. and it's just barely able to play KI (and even KI2) without any MAJOR game-breaking slow-down.

how come I have no problem playing KI on my 1ghz athlon, using the u-64 emu, but no one else ever mentions this emu?
everyone says its unplayable...
???
Plus as far as Capcom fighters, I'm running a P4 1.6
and have absolutely no slowdown issues at all....
(w/256MB ram & WinXP)
Dont Overpay for a computer to play this stuff.. you dont
need anything super fast.

U64 is an option.. true true. But, it's not really faithful emulation as it uses a ton of hacks to get it running at the speed it does. There are many threads detailing this already.
But.. for a slower machine.. yah, definitely a good choice.

Last I remember it also made the computer AI super hard.
(or was that just that I sucked at it?)

I have built machines using a P166. I used mame037 and these machines would play the classics fine.

You can buy a computer for $50 that will play all of those EXCEPT Killer Instinct.
Find a copy of Mame32 version .55 download it and browse the gamelist, if you will be happy with those games then a $50 computer is all you need.

yes, the question is asked a lot and there is not "right" answer. Your hardware requirements depend largely on which games you're willing to give up support for.
A large percentage of game will run very well on old hardware, especially with older versions of MAME, like paigeoliver suggests.
A number of games will not play even with the latest Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, like a number of the CHD games.
The same principles apply to "what video card", "what harddrive size", "how much RAM", ...

I have Mame 56 in a cab
Wal mart HP Pavilion
PIII 700 cel. (CPU)
512 meg memory
XP Pro
64 meg svid TV out Radion ( pci slot) card.
Plays around 80% of games.
I am happy with the games I can play.
<most fighting games seem to work. I do not play them but I had to try them out. Yep, I die with in 2 min. just like the arcades. :-\

80 percent? That version supports like 1500 unique games, are you saying there are 300 unique titles that you can't run full speed? Look some more, I'll bet you would be hard pressed to come up with more than 30. Actually, I would be suprised if you could come up with more than 10 that couldn't be tweaked to run full speed.
