Hi,
I recently purchased a Wells Gardner 19k4914 Arcade Monitor. It was taken out of a Gauntlet converted to an NBA Jam cab.....it says the monitor was made in 1985....
Anyway....the picture on the monitor is OK but it could be alot brighter and a bit more colorful(I adjusted all the knobs shown on the picture on the chassis)....I have the monitor hooked up to my voodoo3 vid card through a hacked d-sub cable and am using an old version of dos advancemame....
I hear you can run wells gardner monitors at 1volt and get a prefectly bright picture with out uping to 5volt with a video amp so i'm thinking a cap kit would probably help the brightness i mean the monitor is 20 years old...
Also I can't seem to get the horzontial width to reach the sides of the monitor screen. There is a half inch gap on both sides. I turned the width coil with a metal allen key and ended up melting the coil then breaking it off altogather(not making any difference in width when broken off).....Anyhow my question is 'How would I widen out the sides to the full size of the monitor and would a Cap kit make any difference on the level of brightness and color?'
Thanks,
CRiMiNaL

You used an Allen wrench in the coil while the monitor was on? Whatever possed you to do that? Didn't you read the monitor FAQ?
Here's what you need to order from Bob Roberts now:
1 Wells-Gardner 4900 series capkit
1 Wells-Gardner 4900 series width coil
1 Generic width capacitor kit
The generic width cap kit will have various values of capacitors for the width circuit. Changing the value of the width cap changes the range of the width control.

Hey Ken
-
A capkit will definitely bring some brightness & color back.
-
I'm going to order the kit from Bob right now :)
hmm....so there is no need for a video amp then?
Also I was going to ask is this monitor suitable for fighters and newer 2d arcade games....becuase this monitor is from 1985..
I mean are the pixels bigger on this monitor or less sharp then on newer cga monitors or other wells gardner models? does this monitor display the same picture as marvel vs street fighter or even street fighter II's monitors....
I know I haved installed the the capkit yet but the 2d fighters in the local arcades look alot better to me....
anyway thx Ken,

If your monitor supports standard resolution, it will play standard resolution games fine.
All monitors are not created equal and the same game may look slightly different from monitor to monitor although you should be able to adjust it to look more or less the same.
Read the FAQ.

Ok awesome...
but still...the question remains does my Wells Gardner 19k4914 need a video amp?
-
Wells-Gardner manufacturers an optional kit to allow video levels of less than 1 volt to be used with their monitors (read $$$ for it).
In my opinion, I'd say you should plan on buying a video amplifier.
-
(what do u mean by read $$$ for it???)
ok great :)
so i guess i will buy one off andy @ ultimarc.com...
hmm....how can i find out if my Voodoo 3 3000 agp vid card out puts 5 volts on pin-9?
also i was thinking of hooking up 2 video cards.....one for my pc monitor (Geforce 6600GT AGP) and one for the arcade monitor in the PCI slot....."my question is will MS-Dos support 2 monitors?"....or set it up so when i boot into dos it will use the arcade monitor instead of the PC monitor automatically......
Thanks Ken :)

I'm betting he means if you get it right from WG expect to pay thru the nose for it.
I need a video amp as well. There's another guy a few posts back that needs one too. I can order three for us to save on the shipping,

The VGA standard dictates the voltage. There's nothing stopping you measuring it though if you think for some reason yours is not outputting the correct voltage.
Just get a JPAC, which has a video amp built in.
I don't believe DOS will support 2 video cards but I may be wrong. I'm sure you won't able to get TV our drivers either.
-
That video amp option costs alot if you order it from Wells.

thanks for all the wonderful info guys :D
i got another question......will running my 19k4914 @ 31khz horzontial refresh rate hurt anything.....say i'm running mame in windows and say Mon-ARC (15khz patch) crashes and i'm bumped back to 31khz will this ruin the monitor or do any damage? ???
THX ;)
-
Running a monitor designed for 15.75 khz at 31 khz will fry it. You'll be way off frequency. Don't do it!
-
Hey Ken,
when I get the cap kit should I resolder all the other capacitors and joints as well? would this help anything? ???
-
I believe most cap kits replace all of the caps that could have gone bad.
Just fit the cap kit and reflow any dry joints imo.
-
If you're going to go through the effort of discharging, and disconecting numerous cables (and marrking them to ensure you put the back correctly), it makes no sense to replace one or two caps... Replace them ALL, you'll have to sooner or later in many cases. Check for all other things while you have it out...save time and headaches later.
-
also.....is there a utility to out put 15khz horzontial refrsh rate for windows on a Voodoo Vid Card simular to the one for the Trident Blade Vid Card??
Tryed powerstrip...that didn't work..
-
Not sure what voodod card you are running but check out this utility and see if it works for you...

I have a Voodoo 3 3000 16mb agp...
Yes i have tried Mon-ARC.....it works in dos and in a fullscreen command.com in windows...but it doesn;t work for the windows desktop....i can't navigate windows at all...
thx

mate, imho get an arcadevga & ipac or jpac. every game + windows is displayed properly without the possibility of going out of frequency. any other problems will be the chassis. supports 640x480 & 800x600 nicely. everything works 640x480 but 800x600 is a bit more problematic because a lot of win games default to or only do 640x480.
