The longer I have been into arcade games (and the longer I have posted here) the more I have found the word "cab" just grates on me, and even I use it.
Anyone else have this issue, or is it just me?
Hmmm, I just checked the search and I seem to prefer to use "cabinet" over "cab". 40 pages of results for me using the term "cab" (which includes EVERY instance of those 3 letters, thus every instance of cabinet is included), and 34 pages of me saying "cabinet". So it seems I am using cabinet 10 times as often as "cab".
-
Not really but I find myself using it on the un-initiated and they look at me like I have 2 heads--I blame you for this :D
-
No, No, I haven't.
I have developed hatred for other words in my life, but not "cab". I can't stand the word "knob".
-
well my wife has......
along with the words:
arcade
cabinet
gameroom
spend more money on ...
and many more...

Yeah, my wife is really hating "I need it" lately. But I do honey, honest!
-
I don't mind "cab", it is the word "carb" I hate.
-
The word "cade" is getting a little overused, but cab seems fine. Worst word is money -- hard to get, harder to keep.

That's just because you're a knob, fredster ;)
Ya know, I noticed the same thing you did a few weeks back, paige, but here's the way I'm gonna chalk it up.
You'll use "cab" here, to shorten stuff, or you just feel lazy for that split second or so, and you'll use cabinet elsewhere.

Bugs me a bit actually. Not sure why, I just feel silly saying it. I try to pronounce the whole word whenever possible.
cab-i-net
easy!
Of course, my wife has a list of keywords, arcade cabinet being nearly at the top of the list. I can always tell when I hit a new word in the list as her left eye starts to twitch. scary.
She looks at the postal carrier with knives for pupils every time she sees the poor guy carrying a box with my name on it.
-
I don't even like calling it a cabinet, but I have used both cab and cabinet. I don't feel like I built a kitchen cabinet or something...I built a videogame arcade.

Too bad...it's carbs that keep your body running. Americans eat too much protein as it is.
-
The other day I caught a cab because I was in a hurry to get some cab files to put on my arcade cab so I could update the OS.
-
What a waste of a thread this is, cab, cab, cab, cab. :P

The word "cab" is also better than "crabs" too
-
I'm sure that someone will be selling a MAME cabinet named CABCADE on Ebay very soon.
-
I agree, "cab" and "cade" is just laziness.
-
I agree. I remember going to play the Asteroids machine or the Gorf machine. As kids I doubt we ever called them cabinets. That was something I picked up when MAME intruded into my life. ;D
-
I think I figured it out. I am a general arcade guy first, and a Mame guy second. Mainstream arcade collectors tend to have 3+ machines, so the word "cab" when used is always qualified with another word, such as "jamma cab", "Burgertime cab", "Crappy Mappy cab", "old Pole Position cab", "Williams cab" etc.
Around HERE people just use the word all by itself, because MOST of the people here only have one machine.
-
Anyone here like Cab Calloway?
-
A little before my time...are you suggesting a jazz cab?
-
I agree, "cab" and "cade" is just laziness. I don't know about you guys, but when we were kids, we called them "arcade machines". I like this because a machine, as a whole, serves a purpose. Whereas a cabinet is referring to the wood structure.
I agree. I tend to think of mine as arcade machines too. The cab (or cabinet if you prefer) only refers to an empty box. Once it has all the goodies inside it's a machine. :) I usually say I have a NEO-GEO in a Dynamo cab, or I have a MAME machine in a Midway cab.

the first time I discovered this site and was reading through, someone used the word "cab" in a thread, and I thought they were talking about a Taxi cab.
-
Cab, not so much.
*insert clever prefix*-cade is getting rediculous.
"Look at my new cabinet Ibuiltitmyselfcade!"
Then again, my cabinet is called Arcadia.. (I managed to get rid of the 'E' tho.).
-
I didn't before I susbscribed to this thread! *unsubscribed* :D
-
I have picked up the term since building my own machine. It was used extensively when I was first looking around and bothered me a lot until I got used to it. I now refer to the cabinet (or cab) sometimes when talking specifically about the wood, but I also sometimes find myself using the term "arcade cabinet", which is kind of odd unless you're used to hearing it. i don't particularly like the term, but it's sort of MAME machine lingo, at least on the 'net in general.

Doesn't Bother me,
As long as it is not yellow, black + white checkered
