svgalib doesn't work with radeon 9xxx so you can't generate your own modelines. try to use "device_video vbe" to force advmame to only use the AVGA built in modes.

I am going to try this later anyway just in case...  Is there any sort of DOS TSR I need to load in order to use VBE?
