I don't know about free, but you could try out demos of ReBirth (http://www.propellerheads.se/) (an excellent Roland 303, 404 and 808 emulator package- perfect for game music) and Reason (a full virtual studio). ReBirth should be cheap enough if you shop around, it was $180 new. I've seen it go on eBay for $50.

You could also try a demo of Acid (http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/acidfamily.asp), I've never used it but I hear it's cheap and easy (like your Mom!)

Fruity Loops, comes with a bunch of premade sounds you can edit together, make your own sounds, etc. ive laid out a few of my own techno tracks using it and they come out really nice,  i dunno about demos or whatever its not free but there are ways of aquiring these things...  PM me if u want to know
