So much for keeping your equipment simple enough to perform field repairs.

I agree. I can't see how this thing is practical AT ALL! It's definitely cool, but what do you do when the thing falls on it's side?

What do you do when a regular tractor falls on its side? I think the goal is to avoid that.

If a plustech falls in the forest and no-one is around to hear it...

I wonder how fast in can move..

Am I right in seeing that those are made by John Deere?
Those seem like they'd be used for logging or at the very least, clearing lots for new construction purposes. I bet they work AWESOME for that purpose!

I saw something on Discovery or something abou that thing. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a sortof "eco-friendly" tree feller or something like that.

You'd have to be a pretty soused hillbilly to flip a regular tractor on it's side. This six-legged monstrosity...not so much.

I think I saw the same show. I think it was on "Modern Marvels" on the History Channel. The show was about the logging/lumber industry.
From my understanding this is indeed an eco-friendly "Feller Buncher". It grabs the trunk of a tree with a hydraulic grapple, "fells" it with a built in saw, then strips the branches off of it and spits it out. They are pretty impressive machines. One of the neat things about this one is that it is very stable on steep terrain that normal machinery wouldn't stand a chance on. It treads lightly compared to rigs with tracks or rubber tires.

Besides the forestry thing, a slightly modified version of this machine would be extremely useful doing cleanup after hurricanes. My hometown got pretty well flattened by Ivan this past summer, and walkers like this could've easily gotten into places wheeled or tracked vehicles simply couldn't reach. Between city/county contracts, and the utilities having to clear all the debris to get their services back up and working, an enterprising company could've paid for a fleet of these things had they had them in position to clean up after that one storm.

Someone should teach that webmaster that it isn't wise to imbed 3 quicktime videos in a single page. It actually managed to crash Firefox.

I have actually seen wheeled vehicles with that type of harvester head in action.
The were widening one of the major roads near me and they had two of them clearing the trees where the new lanes would go. They were amazing to watch. Not only do the grab the tre, fell it, and strip the branches., they also cut them into measured lengths.
It looks to me like they are using existing John Deere equipment and adding their walker system to it.

Or we could stick rocket launchers and laser cannons on it.
