Title: You Don't Know Jack Controller
Post by: SteveJ34 on March 15, 2005, 11:26:53 am
Is anyone else interested in building YDKJ controller similar in style to the post by Sasquatch?

I want some shallow buttons from Happs but don't really need anything else for myself at this time and there is a $25.00 minimum order now (perhaps there always was and my purchases exceeded that).

If someone else needs a small order from Happs for an item not available elsewhere, I'd be interested in combining your items with mine in some way.

Granted we would have shipping to deal with but if anyone has interest send PM or post here.

Steve

P.S. I've also sourced other components from Mouser if anyone is interested in those savings over Radio Shack.

Just another idea on the route to contruction, I built my own for my cab about 3 months ago, a real nice addition.
Instead of going with the pvc pipe thing though, I stopped off at a local bike shop and picked up 4 motorcycle press on handlegrips.
That, and 4 standard arcade PB's, (the ones where the cherry switch sits vertically though) and a little whittling, and I've got some fairly comfortable buzzers.

I've got to get to updating my cab page one of these days, I've documented the whole shebang, but haven't had a chance to WebAtize it.

Ponyboy came through on the shallow buttons at a rate of 1.55 to avoid the minimums at happs.

I've also been toying with a couple of different ideas for the hand buzzers not that there is anything wrong with the PVC approach.

I'd be interested in seeing a pick of the motorcycle grip idea.

I also thought about copper pipe with end caps......still thinking.

I'll see if I can post a pic later today.
Thinking about the copper piping controller for a while other reason.... I picked up a game for our New Years party called Lightning Reaction. Now if I could just interface it to YDKJ, that would take the game to a whole new level...

Have the "correct answer" light on 1 controller activate a small charge!you dont need that game just a small battery and ppl willing to hold the "shocking" part of the controller.

.....

I thought this was a great idea and picked up some "chopper bicycle" hand grips this weekend from Walmart witha"cool flame motif" built into the grips.

Thanks for tossing this out there as a different handbuzzer approach.

A 3/4" or 7/8" diameter pushbutton with vertical microswitch would be ideal but  not sure if such an animal exists.

Otherwise, I'll probably just use a pushbutton similar to what sasquatch used in his original design fashioned onto one end.

I am building a cabinet with changable panels. I made one panel just for YDKJ... I took one of those "Indestructable" keyboards, the thin rubber ones, and added it to my panel along with three happ large push buttons... These things look like the buttons from Press-Your-Luck... And added some screw, answer buttons.

Works like a charm. Nobody fighting over a keyboard and the large buttons adds to the game show like experience.

Pictures coming soon

I picked up YDKJ Vol 1,2,3 and The Ride from an Ebay auction. This showed up over the weekend.

I had a couple of intermiitent crashes while playing Vol 1 on a box which is running Win2k.

The game ran fine to a point and then the box blue screened.

Any tricks of the trade or suggestions for how to make this more stable under Win2k?

(I'm using 98SE on my mame cab but was trying to set this up on a small shuttle box running 2k which will connect to big screen TV).

Make sure the graphics driver is up to date.

Also, make sure you are running at either 800x600 or 640x480 for YDKJ..

Hey, using bike handgrips sounds like a cool idea.  Please let me know how it works! :)

I'll  post  a pic once I decide on a button type. I may end up just using the same style as what you did but am examining a couple of other options first.
