Probably because it was buried 18 pages deep in a thread too long to read.  I wouldn't have known if you hadn't posted it separately, thanks!

Take note... they will be asking everyone who is using their name to ask permission.  So for those out there selling mame machines... This might not be the win you where looking for.

Hopefully they will allow people who are selling legal cabinets with only legal roms (if any) and use their name... And hopefully at the same time when you ask permission.... they will also allow for shipping of mame... but thats another story.

Now we just need to make sure nobody uses iROMs and only buys from StarRoms.

[pre-emptive strike]

Boycott iROMs!
Support www.starroms.com (http://www.starroms.com)

If I were Nicola, I'd set up the email address "permission at mame dot whatever" and then set up an auto-responder that sent out the same reply to everyone. Basically it would say somethin like:

"Dear sir or madam. Yes you may use the MAME name and logo for non-profit purposes. You may not sell the software. You may not sell roms. If you have some for-profit purpose which you would like to discuss further, email us at llicensing at mame dot whatever"

This way it's back to business as usually for Nicola.

From aarongiles.com:

Quote
Of course, permission will be given to many legitimate uses (still have to ask, though!) But there is indeed a growing commercial sector that is abusing the MAME name to make claims that aren't true without violating the law ("Play 1000s of arcade games!" -- yeah right, show me your license for that), and quite frankly, many of the MAME team members are as against that as Mr. Foley is.

We'll be announcing more details shortly, but the most likely end result is going to be: if you want to use the MAME name, you've got to get rid of your illegal ROM links, your information on how to buy/download illegal ROMs, and your claims that anything you sell will let you play 100s or 1000s of games (unless you've legitimately licensed them).

Sounds fair to me.  It finally puts everyone on a level playing field with the people like myself and dreamarcades who are trying to do things right.  :)
