Is the USB GP-Whiz from KeyWhiz the same as the KeyWhiz, just with an USB input instead of a keyboard input?
-
its recognized as a joystick instead of a keyboard
-
Does that make it any better or worse (other than it does not use the keyboard port)?

As is typical with most any question, it depends....
It's fine for any game/platform which expects a gamepad as the interface or can be configured to use a gamepad over keyboard functions.
However, if you have a particular game that cannot be redefined, you are limited to creating a workaround that will cause a joy function to be converted to a keypress, ie: joytokey for example.
It is *not* a USB interfaced Keywhiz. It is recognized by Windows as a Gamepad with a joy and x number of buttons.
However, it is a great product for what it is designed to be and would work perfect for MAME applications.
I trust the above....
....makes sense
....helps.

I just hooked one up tonight and it works great. Games in MAME need to be set to allow joystick input. The GP-Whiz defaults map out to the MAME defaults for joystick 1 (Up Down Left Right - button 1=Joystick Button 0, etc.)
It requires a little more preplanning and setup in MAME than a keyboard encoder, but sure works great when it's setup.

Is that all we get? Surely you can give us a better review than that :)

I promise to give a better review when I've had a little more time to play with it. I will add another joystick and some more buttons to the panel it's on. Then I'll move the panel among three different MAME computers and make sure it works plug-and-play on all three.
