I'm sure there is no way that i'll ever get a star wars yoke, but id like to play some of those games. Cant i just hook up an analog stick for the same functionality?
-
I don't believe there are any good solutions.
I would LOVE to see a good cheap solution. But its just not viable for anyone to do. And anyone who tries to build repos find that having all the parts built will cost around 300+ in parts (let along dev costs.
I would love to see someone build one with parts from home depot or something similar... Like maybe a combination of a twist grip + a wooden box or something.

You can play Star Wars with a trackball, but it feels really wonky.

So no on the analog stick then?

Analog stick will work fine, but doesn't feel the same.

If you're going to get an analog stick, I'd wait for a really good ebay deal on a Happ's one.
It's not the same as playing the ORIGINAL with a yoke, but it's exactly like playing the Trilogy machines with the Happ's stick on them.
The "any old analog stick" will feel like a cheap PC stick.
The Happ's stick FEELS like an arcade control, by comparison--but is still not a yoke.

Seems like a mouse-hack would be the easiest place to start... Use the mouse wheels as the X and Y axis and turn up the sensitivity. A mouse also has two or three buttons...
Is that how the twisty grip one worked?

trackball works well for me after adjusting sensitivity in mame

What handle type did the Trilogy machines use?

THIS (http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/95006500.htm) one.
I picked up mine on ebay for $15 "pre-owned" but never installed.

Thanks. So here's a broader question: Which is the best general purpose Happ analog handle type for a cab, if you can pick just one?
-
Probably the Tron-style one, but I've never seen one on ebay.

I had been playing Star Wars with a trackball for so long that when I finally encountered a real working machine I thought it to be a bit too easy!

Flight sticks suck at starwars... You will get MUCH better results with a mouse.
I would keep watching ebay and hope for a better solution... .
Or possibly Game Cab :) But have to wait on that one.
But having the wrong controls suck... just play it on your main pc (better for vector games then most cabs anyway for hires) and just dream....

It's all personal opinion on which is better.
I like my very weak return to center analog stick (it's too basic to be called a flight stick) more than my mouse or trackball. (Stronger return to center sticks, OTOH, aren't as good.)
The star wars yoke is the best to me, of course, but I bet there's some 10 year old kid who only knows about gamepads that thinks the analog thumb stick is the best in the world for starwars (if he'll play it, that is). ::)
